NASCAR star Tony Stewart hit and killed another driver who was walking on the track in a sprint car race on Saturday night.

The other driver, Kevin Ward Jr., had collided with Stewart on the previous lap, leaving Ward’s car with a flat tire and pushed into the wall. As officials threw a caution, Ward left his car and began walking down the track — gesturing angrily toward Stewart — before being clipped and dragged 50 feet by Stewart’s car.

Several spectators told Bob Pockrass of The Sporting News that Stewart appeared to throttle his car before colliding with Ward.

Tony Stewart will not race in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race after he struck and killed
sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr., who had climbed from his car and was on the track trying
to confront Stewart during a race in upstate New York on Saturday night.

Greg Zipadelli, the competition director for Stewart-Haas racing, announced the decision
Sunday morning. Regan Smith will race in place of Stewart.

I still remember that horrible year of the Indy 500 when a guy was stuck and killed by an ambulance going the wrong direction on the racetrack.

Right before contact did it look to you like he attempted to jump out of the way?

Looks that way...

Doesn't mean Stewart aimed for him...

OK, I watched it. The young man is clearly at fault.

Don’t be a dumbass on a racetrack.

these cars drive opposite from what you think. When racing at speed, they go around the corner sideways with the front tires turned all the way to the right

Look at the picture in post #94, car turning to the left, tires turning to the right.

Young guy learned a hard lesson. RIP.

Getting out on the track and gesticulating at your rivals is a punkass move and taken from “professional wrestling”. Gets you on TV which is the main idea

But if you listen carefully Stewart guns his engine while approaching the kid.

No he doesn't. The engine revs and the tail kicks out after the point of contact.

FWIW, Ward did walk out onto the track towards Stewart. Terrible accident either way...

Several spectators told Bob Pockrass of The Sporting News that Stewart appeared to throttle his car before colliding with Ward.

***What!? I hope the reference to a collision is actually describing the collision that took out the decedent’s car and not the actual man himself. With what passes for journalism these days, who knows?

Of course it’s important, and I’m sure the investigation will take that into consideration.

But it’s really hard to figure out what really happened based on that one low quality video.

If Stewart really had a GoPro camera on his car or helmet, that would be crucial evidence.

It’s best that Stewart stay off the track for now, for the safety of all concerned.

I watched the video many times and very carefully, the engine revs and the car jerks to the right apparently AFTER he clips the guy, so I am not sure he hit him on purpose.

That's exactly what I see. That, plus the guy who was killed was aggressively moving toward the car.

Damn. Back in the late 70’s my girlfriend, her dad + stepmom used to go to Toledo Speedway. One week we didn’t and that was the week the hotdog man tried to get across the track to the infield. Didn’t make it...

“It’s best that Stewart stay off the track for now, for the safety of all concerned.”

Yeah, I’m not trying to pass judgment on a home vid. Anyone who follows nascar knows he has always had a bit of a confrontational personality, not that that had anything to do with this.....just sayin.
