Rolling Stone reports that the 68-year-old filed papers in their hometown of San Mateo, California on July 29, with a hearing set to take place on December 12.
Not only were the pair married and the parents of two grown children - son Ben and daughter Amber - but they were also frequent musical collaborators, the 61-year-old the inspiration behind a number of her husband's love songs over the years.
The Grammy-winning singer met the then-waitress near his California ranch, documenting their meeting in the 1992 song Unknown Legend.
Once An Angel and Such A Woman were also written about their enduring love story.
Serving as her husband's backing singer in the 1990s, Pegi went on to perform with Neil many times over the years since, including at the 1994 Academy Awards.
Pegi too has released three solo albums since 2007, her husband even occasionally accompanying her on the guitar.
Neil has just come off his Crazy Horse tour in Europe and is gearing up to play in the US in October as part of his solo acoustic set, while his estranged wife recently wrapped her own small US club tour.
They were scheduled to play together at the Farm Aid benefit in North Carolina on September 13, however, Pegi was recently removed from the line-up.

Neil is a lefty, particularly on environmental issues, but he is a great songwriter and musician. The guy has a fifty plus year career going so I think more than just three people like him. I have heard Neil and many other rock n rollers talk politics, and it is very evident that their knowledge of issues is no more than superficial. Why should anyone care what he says on the issues, his music is great.
Hopefully he and Pegi can find a way to work things out.
By the way the only thing the RINO Chris Cristie has right is that Bruce Springsteen is great. Yeah, another lefty but who cares.
I couldn’t agree with you more.
Personally, I’ve hated his politics and loved his music.
Same with Elvis Costello.
They are extremely talented artists that have an unique ability to capture your thoughts and imagination with their words and riffs.
He was a Reagan backer back in the 80s because of his policy on research regarding his 2 sons’ (one from another woman) disability. Cerebral palsy? Apparently the odds of one man siring two children from two women having the same disability was astronomical. ( I could be wrong about the condition).
He has a real nice train setup for his son.
What hockey team do you and Neil follow?
Thanks.... Interesting about Peggy
My marriage was a lot like a Neil Young song:
Started out slow and then fizzled out altogether.
Old man lying
by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.
Don’t let it bring you down
It’s only castles burning,
Find someone who’s turning
And you will come around.
Blind man running
through the light
of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down
to the river of sight
And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing
through the window
in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
If you’re walking home alone.
Don’t let it bring you down
It’s only castles burning,
Just find someone who’s turning
And you will come around.
Don’t let it bring you down
It’s only castles burning,
Just find someone who’s turning
And you will come around.

I liked the guy's music. I am sorry when I see any marriage end.
I never liked his politics, but man -- this guy could really touch a chord in you with some of his reflective songs.
P.S. — The striking background vocals on that song are by Linda Ronstadt. They make a good song a real classic, in my mind.
All three of the Young songs you named and linked video to are great tunes.
But there are at least 10 Neil Young songs that are better. After I get my new PC on line, and equipped with audio and video I don’t have now I will hunt them down and post them at the next good Young opportunity
comes a time
To leave a gal at an age when males vs females stats are getting seriously scary, sorry fellas, way, way cold.
"Like A Hurricane"
"Long May You Run"
"Unknown Legend"
"Winterlong"
"Heart Of Gold"
And I don't know why, but "Harvest" (not to be confused with "Harvest Moon") has always stuck in my mind as a great sentimental song.
I'll tell you something that really sets Neil Young apart as a great singer/songwriter: A lot of his songs seem to associate with places in my mind. I can travel in some quiet places and practically hear his songs playing from the rocks and trees.
So sad to see any marriage fail. They looked like they were made for each other.
Seriesly - reading some of these comments - some of these people must not even be alive. Greatest guitar player and songwriter almost ever. Certainly in a top 10 by anyone’s standard that has a soul
If I’m going out, I’m going retro, consarnit.
The weaving of a harmonica and a steel guitar into so many of his songs really gives his music a distinct sound to it, too.
Clearly this is a common sentiment for many on this thread. I wonder why FR gives him a pass while Springsteen, for example, seems to be nearly universally hated.
Maybe because Springsteen sucks ?
I know he is or was very very popular, but musically and lyrically ?
Not even in the same ball park.
