Word For The Day, Wednesday, August 27, 2014-- bum-rush
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
bum-rush [buhm-ruhsh]
verb, transitive
to force one's way into; crash:
to bum-rush a rap concert.
From the Urban Dictionary:
1. To run full speed into somebody and body slam them into a brick wall, chain link fence, or similar immovable object.
"Dude, I just got bum rushed on the corner of E.9th and Euclid Avenue."
2. The act of attacking someone or something (usually by a group)with the reckless abandon and fervor of one who has nothing to lose.

bumrush, bum rush verb, transitive
1) Crash the gates of a show with a pack of people, in the hope of getting in without having to pay. "Yo! Bumrush the show" -- Public Enemy. (Yo! Bumrush the show) 1987.
2) To get beaten up by a large, angry group of people. Literally, to get rushed by bums or lowlifes.
2) To attack someone or something by wildly charging them full force with no sort of tact or skill other than one's own momentum and possibly the backs and sides of their fists as they randomly flail them out of rage, but certainly consisting of no precisely swung blows.
"Dude, Charlie just bum rushed me!"
bum's rush noun, slang
1. forcible and swift ejection from a place, as of a bum:
When they began to cause a disturbance, they were given the bum's rush.
2. any rude or abrupt dismissal:
He gave the pesky salesman the bum's rush.
Origin: In the 1890-1900s, many saloons had a "free lunch" for customers- sandwiches, pickles, boiled eggs, etc. to encourage them to stay and buy drinks. Sometimes a penniless man (a bum in the term of the day) might slip into the saloon to grab a bite of the "free lunch"- without buying drinks. If the bartender spotted him, he was about to get the "Bum's Rush"- out of the door and into the street.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Let’s see some homework, please!
I won’t be giving you the bum-rush, I am out of here for awhile. Later!
In DC, Bums rush in where Angels fear to tread ....
Wise men never give them cash.
Both of my sons went to Georgetown and we visited often. One time I was walking on M street with my wife and didn't realize she was a few yards behind me, as she was looking at a store window. One of the scruffier vagrants accosted me and, against my better judgment, I gave him a buck. A few seconds later, he accosted my wife as she was catching up. She had seen me giving him the dollar and, pointing to me, she said, "I'm with him." The guy cracked up.
and in DC under Obama the Bums have proliferated. there is a homeless shelter right as you come up out of the 3d street tunnel. They are outside the shelter and on all 4 corners. It was not always this way. Holy Rosary, situs of the upcoming nuptials is only a block or two away. We laugh, saying hopefully the wedding guests will all be able to find street parking or space in the small lot next to the church, because if they need to park farther away, there could be some bum-rushing going on.
A+++
Excellent link. And good riddance!
We haven’t been to DC in nearly 20 years ... I suppose it can be confusing at times to distinguish b/w panhandlers on the street & those on the Hill ...
It’s a matter of degree: a buck vs. a billion.
Not at all, the Hill ones are clean and well-dressed. you cannot imagine the others....
Football: Bum-rush: any one of several plays involving the fullback carrying the ball?
A+++
I did foresee a lot of puns with today’s word, but not one concerning Mr. Phillips. Glad you decided to Wade in.
I didn’t get out as planned. Got a phone call from my nephew from NJ, that he is coming through here any minute. His father had a stroke and is in the hospital and he is stopping for a few minutes here. We will meet up again, but now I am on hold for my day.
