Mine do that every year.
Depends on the variety though, some do it better than others.
C. Moschata do it the best. It’s one reason they’re so bug/drought tolerant. A vine borer eating one part of hte vine doesn’t kill everything further on. Just that one little bit.
I don’t even put a shovel full of dirt. Just lay the bottom of the vine on the ground and keep it watered along the vine.
We only had five zukes. The deer got in the garden just in time to chew up the one plant and wound the remaining plant badly. Hubby fried some up, and with the others he made his WONDERFUL zuke bread. I have one loaf frozen to save for Thanksgiving.
Hubby decided to only plant the two plants so that we weren’t drowning in zukes, and instead we didn’t have enough. Luckily we only had the one invasion over the fence, so most of his garden did well. The deer ate every rose bud though. He was pissed about that ... I kind of wish he would take all the roses out of the garden. I did gripe at him enough so that he removed some, and then relocated most of the rest into little beds here and there. Our veg garden actually began as a rose garden, then morphed.
Sounds like venison needs to be on the menu as well...
I mean, if you’re going to feed them, might as well enjoy some of the fruits of your labor.
Just sayin’...
The COLLAGE has a nature preserve, and so as we are within spittin distance, we are overrun with deer in spite of being near a very busy business area. The liberals won’t allow the deer to be thinned of course.
Some nights there are as many as three different herds wandering up and down our street, ranging from 4 or 5 deer to as many as 10 in each unit. Most everyone around here has netting, and fences on and around everything. Every year it gets worse. My husband has yet to figure out a way to “sneak” a townie deer. He goes out to my land and hunts - 25 miles away. *sigh*
Oh there you are. :)
my first thought was rabbit or deer
Me too.....I have seen “Mr Bunny” around and have occasionally tossed it some leftover salad so I think that’s the culprit!!
I love roses. So I try to have a few in the front yard along the patio. They suffered due to drought and hard winter, and Hubby decided that they were probably going to die anyway.
So he has been busy helping the wild petunia (I think that’s what he called it) spread. It has totally taken over the rose bed and is taller than the miniature rose bushes.
While the flowers are pretty, the plant itself looks kinda weedy and messy. I have 2 beautiful Rosa Rugosa in the back yard, and we harvest rose hips about the size of a grape off those. They are high in vitamin c, so that’s part of our “forage food”.
Beautiful cukes and maters. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Rose hips - I never remember to check for those! I think my husband pointed one out to me once ... :). I think I’ll mention it to him. We have a nice echinacea plant that finally came on really well this year. I am not sure that it’s the right variety to use for medicinal, but I suppose I can look into it.
When I was on Coumadin I read that echinacea will increase the effects of the anti-coagulant, and to avoid taking it. I never knew that echinacea had blood thinning properties, but it may explain something. Because while on Coumadin I did not get a single cold. Makes me wonder ...
I never really knew about them until I got into gardening. We collect a bunch of wild rose hips now and then along the backyard jungle next to the empty lot.
But I did a little research and found out that rosa rugosa has these really large ones, so I ordered some and they’ve really grown and do well here. Very pretty big flowers too.
