That’s a perfect place for him.
Montreal has a handful of excellent restaurants, but an incredible number of bad ones. Food is boiled until the taste is gone, french fries are served with gravy on them, and the people at the McDonalds restaurants, although those actually serve GREAT Egg McMuffins, pretend they don’t understand English (back when everyone was required to know it).
They can’t stand English-only tourists anywhere, there.
It really is like a low-rent version of a Paris nightmare.

If you say bonjour first they are then fine with English and friendly.
And fries with gravy and cheese curds is poutine. Delicious.
There are some great restaurants.
Great bagels.
Smoked meat is said to be great, but I didn’t like it that much.
