I was talking to the head sales guy at my dealership and he was telling me of the 14 or so Dodge Challenger SRTs they sold only two were still on the road, the rest were wrecked. I have a Challenger R/T and it’s got crazy power. A man has to know his limitations!
He had to hauling “ASS” to do that kind of damage!
I had the opportunity to drive one a couple of years ago. What a beast. I can't imagine getting behind the wheel of the ones with 700 HP..
The friend was with the kid in the car too? Article says he was treated for “non-life threatening injuries”
Yup. If you look at the pic of the car it looks like an airbag deployed on the passenger side, but the driver’s side looks awful with a shattered windshield. The car looks so destroyed, it’s amazing anyone survived at all.
Similar root cause problems, as you have implicitly correctly identified.
Yeah, he sure did take it for a spin.
Wrecks of these type cars.

Here is one that the 2 people survived.

My aunt had a Triumph TR-6. It lived in the carport. She still has it.
At times, I would like to have my old 77 CJ-5.
The first words that occurred to me were “Who in their right mind ...”
The challenger is the only modern car I would have.
Years ago, my FIL bought a new corvette. It was practically worshipped in some respects. All were forbidden to touch it.
One weekend he went out of town. He insisted on me house sit and dog sit. My only real rule, if the house caught on fire, break the golden rule and save the vette.
I was also careful. I'd like to think I was very careful. I puttered around in it for a while, and though it was going to stall on me...very disappointed. I floored it, and I was utterly unprepared for how much power that car made at wide-open throttle.
I'd like to think I was more careful that this kid, but I don't know. Empty rode (2AM), fastest car you're ever going to get it, the owner tells you it's OK. At 18 that doesn't sound like a bad idea. 20 years years later....for me 20 seconds later, you realize that a Nissan Maxima is a fast car, but driving these really high-end machines can bear almost no relation to driving a fast car.
It looks the same, there's s steering wheel, pedals, etc, but if you try, everything feels different and you can get into big trouble faster than you can think about what's happening.
It's a shame.
Way back in the early 1970s, my dad owned a 1968 Plymouth GTX with a 440 and a 4-Speed (not a six-pack, just a 4bbl). A young adult (18 or 19) wanted to buy the car from him. My dad made the kid bring his dad to the purchase, and made them both ride in it while he showed them just how powerful the big-block was in that car (back roads, not in town). He wanted the kid and his dad to know just what the kid was getting into.
Living in the midwest, I like front wheel or AWD cars. If I can get a huge discount on one, I would take a look. But that would mean the economy tanked or gas is north of $5..
Had those twin SU carbs on two Triumphs. Never again.
