I’ll side with John Derbyshire—data is singular.
Whether singular or plural, Derby can’t tell when it’s ouija.
But “media” is plural.
And the expression “the reason being is ...” The verb in that phrase is “being.” It does not require “is.” It would only need another verb if the phrase were itself a noun, which it is not. Substitute “is” for “being” and listen to how stupid it sounds.

Data is the plural of datum but may be used as singular based on sentence construction.
Datum is singular, data is plural.
Only if you have a package of them. Just not many folks deal with a datum (singular) any more.
