Did the NFL indefinitely suspend Ray Rice because they saw the video or because we saw it?

Did the NFL suspend Ray Rice indefinitely after he was given an initial 2 game suspension because A.) they saw the video inside the elevator, or B.) because we saw the inside-the-elevator video?

If it is because of A, then why did they formulate a 6 game suspension to be followed by banning for a second offense and not apply the 6 game rule to Ray Rice? If this is because the inside-the-elevator video surfaced, then will the NFL have a system for those who are caught by video and those not caught by video?

In the end, IMHO, Ray Rice should have been given indefinite suspension when the outside-the-elevator video surfaced, and not just a 2 game suspension, and let him earn his return like Michael Vick did.

Oh, because you heard that or saw a clip?

Sure, there are many who would and do. Meanwhile on your say-so I have to believe many women activists were protesting Roethlisberger.

Look, truth is many people are going to support and many are going to protest.

Personally, I think even the more on-point film is faulty - it is not conclusive. Something happened, but exactly what I still cannot tell. It misses whole seconds being just CC, so I don’t see a fist at all nor where it may have gone. At best I see a left shoulder moving. But she quite clearly hit the rail, which could be the “knock-out”. Never mind this isn’t “spousal abuse” - this is in the middle of a fight in which she is in his face, not an innocent meek woman at home just getting thumped *repeatedly* because he’s upset she didn’t get his beer.

As for the “like a piece of garbage”? Total nonsense. She is out cold and dead weight. How is he supposed to help her easily, especially if he is also inebriated a bit? He was just trying to move her out. Did not look so “cruel” as has been insisted over and over. It’s ludicrous.

The worst for me is that Rice seems (in the recent film) to mostly just leave her alone at the doorway while she comes to. Doesn’t sidle up to her or such. Maybe she kept growling at him to stay away, I don’t know. But he didn’t appear to comfort her or anything. That much is clear, barring audio.

Well, if you can't see the clear and plain spousal abuse without making excuses for Ray Rice you have drank the kool aid. I will not be party to drinking the kool aid for him or any Steeler for that matter. The older I get, the less I like football and I got a chance to grow up during the dynasty years of 4 SBs in 6 years.

"Meanwhile on your say-so I have to believe many women activists were protesting Roethlisberger."

If you don't believe me, then go dig out the old local news broadcasts from back then. The protests at Heinz field was on all the local news stations. If your wife is the huge Steelers fan, then she will remember that.

So, what you are saying is that you admit Roethlisberger raped 1 girl ( I say 2, he paid them both off), but the Steelers did nothing about it.

I see lots of Big Ben jerseys in Pittsburgh. The team did nothing to him.

The Baltimore Ravens fired Rice upon seeing the video. They did the right thing and have no serious running back for the season. You guys fire Roethlisberger and you can say you did the right thing.

"So, what you are saying is that you admit Roethlisberger raped 1 girl ( I say 2, he paid them both off), but the Steelers did nothing about it."

This statement shows your bias. If you knew anything about the case, the woman in Phoenix did not get raped. It was sex and she was trying to get money out of him. Yes, I have no allegiance to Ben Rothlesburgher. I believe he raped that girl in Georgia. She never pressed charges and yes I believe there was a payoff. If the Steelers had dumped him I would have applauded them. There were rumors that they were considering it, but it obviously did not happen. Some of the rumor said that what prevented them was because of the huge cap hit they would have had to take. His security detail (off duty cops) got in a lot of trouble.

There is a huge difference, Ben was never even charged after an investigation into the incident by Georgia police. Both Ray Rice and Ray Lewis were not only charged, but both plead out.

As for Ben Rothlesburgher jerseys, you won't see me wearing his or any of their jerseys. People have forgiven him now I believe because he got married, has kids and has seemed to settle down. Just like in a few years if Rice rehabs his image he will be forgiven also. I will say this, I would hope if there was video of Ben like Rices first video that came out I would hope the Rooneys would do the right thing, but I don't know for sure.

By your answer you obviously didn’t comprehend one thing I said. You are no longer worth posting to because you have no interest in a meaningful debate.

Thanks for playing....

The only thing you played with is yourself.

You just don’t like to accept the reality that your Pittsburgh Steelers, harbored and currently harbor a rapist.

I am a woman, incidentally. My husband is the Steeler nut, but he’s lived here for 25 years.

I believe you. My point is you are taking isolated 3rd-party reports/film and making that the end-all be-all of how things are. Hearing about some fans supporting him (and why not, if it’s not apparent he’s guilty?) doesn’t mean ALL fans support him.

I am not making excuses. Really, I am not.

I am just sick of the non-stop (literally!) coverage of this 1 incident, more than any other “football” incident I’ve seen yet. And if he did actually punch her, in the face (none of which is obvious with an objective eye; rather than e.g., push her on the shoulder and she landed on the railing), why is this 1 incident of a socked woman in the middle of a drunken fight more important than a) gang manslaughter b) rape c) accidental manslaughter d) outright murder as we have seen some in TV the last 10 years?

Seriously, why? Given the context is it really worth ruining him but not the others? Including the fact he has no record? (Not that I would ruin the accidental manslaughter, but still, point is why is this causing so much hoohplah but not the others?)

Vick got actual jail for dog-fighting and abuse, Hernandez will for genuine murder, but I don’t think any player has gotten the ceaseless TV pillorying that Rice has. Maybe, as some radio hosts have posited (I think Rush) it’s because of the film? Maybe so - it’s the only one with film. Seems to me people just don’t believe or care about anything unless it’s on moving pictures (actually that is proven in the historical record; look at the impact of war photos, then war moving pix).

"Seriously, why?"

I think as the AP story shows, it's much more than about Ray Rice now. His part of the story is actually over. It's about people high up in the NFL and possibly Ravens organization that either willfully ignored this or didn't care and for whatever reason wanted Ray Rice to get off with a light punishment. Meanwhile people like Josh Gordon smokes weed and he gets banned for a year. Seriously? I understand he's popped a few times on this, but it's freakin' weed!! Not even a performance enhancing drug. It's about Rothlesburgher getting suspended 4 games and there not even having charges brought against him. It's about a couple of guys down in New Orleans putting "bounties" on peoples head, the coaching staff having proven they didn't know about it, but they get suspended for half a year because they should have known. It's about New England spygate. In short, for me its about an out of control and power hungry NFL front office that arbitrarily dishes out punishments based on who they like and who they don't like.

Fine post. My take is Jayna begged Goodel & company not to come down hard on her meal ticket. They did what she wanted and put the rest of the punch out video on the shelf.

Now all the male feminazis are screeching this forced a reversal so Jayna and Ray are out in the cold with no millions rolling in for her high end shopping and spa treatments etc etc

I agree, it’s definitely a possibility. If not begging, lying so she doesn’t lose her money and “fame”. I really don’t know the woman, but with that “look” and the way she was behaving on the film (and apparently per witnesses) it wouldn’t surprise me if she mainly likes him for the riches he could have brought her.

They do seem to be all over the place, as I said.

But I’m also talking about “the fans”, or the public in general. I didn’t even know about this Gordon guy, sorry. No media frenzy, no threads on FR. Yes, the NFL may be inconsistent (wow, compared to battery he got a year - actually it may be partly because of DUI) but he was not getting alot of attention and vitriol.

I don’t know that officials “like” Ray Rice; no one “likes” the Ravens except us locals, and that’s the truth (outright hatred - just watch FR)! We don’t bring in the money as certain other select franchises. Unless they wanted to help preserve him for other possible endeavors in more favored franchises.

My main beef with Ravens fans is how they cheered Rice when he came on the practice field during training camp. And it wasn’t just a cheers. The whole place was cheering for him and showing their support.

I also have a beef with the Ravens organization. They may or may not have seen this video, I don’t know. But they did see the first video and the police report states that he punched her causing her to lose consciousness. Did they really need to see the actual punch and her banging her head off of that rail to make this decision? Instead, they pumped him up as to what a great guy he is. They are reacting to the outrage, not being pro active. As I understand the NFL, the teams can put further punishments on the player. They can suspend him above what the NFL suspended him. If they would have come out and said no we don’t think two games is enough after reading this police report, we are going to suspend him for half the season. Who knows, perhaps he would still be a Raven if they had done that.

When I first read and saw the video, I thought he should have gotten at least 8 games if not the full season. If they would have done this in the beginning, when the tape came out there wouldn’t be this outrage and I’ll bet he would still be a Raven.

“My main beef with Ravens fans”

And my main problem is you are painting with broad brushes by a film of a camp, where a few rabid fans go.

My main problem with Steeler fans (and I have experience in this, including 2nd-hand info I normally wouldn’t be exposed to) is they take football far too seriously. It is the end-all be-all and nothing else matters, especially if the Steelers are involved. Even real Colt fans weren’t that obsessed. I mean, a guy insists his funeral wake is a bunch of Steeler stuff? With maybe a small pix of his family there? Priorities are really screwed up.

I think my DH is slightly learning, but not sure. I’m scared to ask to do anything that might conflict with that game time. Seriously. I mean, family stuff, too, that is important for the family and makes me look bad when he or we don’t go. But I think with the years and our son, it’s getting better. I do not want my son being so absolutist about unimportant things. There is alot of tension when it comes to some event coming up that we should attend.

My parents LOVE football (will watch any game, which is 1 thing about DH - it’s ONLY Steelers), but they will even abandon Colts (old days, no DVR) or Ravens if something else is to be done. No fear.

Funny thing about DH is he is so insistent on watching games and so on, yet what do Steelers really do for him? Our BIL was born a Redskins fan, and ACTUALLY WAS GOING TO PLAY for them, until he got a hernia that ended that dream. He was actually going to get paid for that, would be dependent upon the Redskins, but even BIL (who has many faults, BTW) will do something else if called upon. He actually had “skin” (yikes) in the game, but he is not as lockstep as my DH, who’s only been in Pittsburgh maybe 10x.

Alright, off my soapbox! Sorry, just had to rant a bit.

Hey, at least the Ravens got rid of the guy, no matter the real reason.

So you are going to paint a broad brush stroke based on your husband and say that all Steelers fans are overboard rabid, yet admonish me for painting a broad brush stroke about a specific incident at training camp? Really?

Secondly, you are going to compare rabid fans with rabid fans who support a guy in the middle of legal investigations into spousal abuse and cheering him on? Really?

If you had wanted to compare apples to apples it would have been if while Ben was embroiled in his rape incident and the fans were cheering him on during training camp. That did not happen. As I stated before, he was persona non gratis for a while and there were womens groups protesting outside the stadium during that season.

"Hey, at least the Ravens got rid of the guy, no matter the real reason"

It sounds to me like you are the rabid Ravens fan who can't criticize your team/organization. They only got rid of him because of that tape coming to light. They knew what happened before then. They have even admitted they knew he punched her (see Ozzie Newsome's press conference) and yet chose to do nothing. In fact, they pumped up what a great guy he was. As for me, I still can't forgive Dan Rooney who after claiming to be a "lifelong Republican" came out and publicly supported Barrack Obama and took that ambassadorhship to Ireland.
