That’s a great chart! May I grab it for a presentation?
Do note, however, that this data is based on desktop operating systems. While a big part of the market, Server operating systems are not included here.
i wonder how much of the market change was forced due to business s/w licensing contracts that require o/s upgrades within a certain timeframe of a new version release. i would guess a lot.
Annnnd I still won't buy it.
I won't change till Windows 9 gets its first SP THEN I'll wait till I see the reviews and then I'll switch IF I need a new computer.
RE: Thats a great chart! May I grab it for a presentation?
That is not my chart. I got it from here:
Of course you know that the pie chart keeps changing as market share changes so that chart might be obsolete in a few months.
RE: Running Windows 8.1 on a Microsoft Surface Tablet PC....FANTASTIC!
Believe me, I really want to like the Surface Pro 3 tablet. But the PRICE turns me off.
[ I only got 8.1 because windows 7 dont support the latest cpu ]
What sort of fancy pants CPU did you get that windows 7 won’t support if you don’t mind me asking????

[ A friend of mine has a prediction: Microsoft will continue its decline and Oracle will buy them within 5 years. ]
Virtual Box seems to be getting better and better vs. MS Virtual PC....
I am fine with that...
I am very happy with Windows 8.1. We have it on one tablet, 3 laptops, and one desktop. One other laptop and one desktop that my kids use are still on Windows 7, but that is because they so rarely use them that I didn’t see the point in spending the money on it. Now that the oldest child is turning 7, she is using a PC more often, that those machines will likely see the upgrade soon. I simply don’t think people appreciated Metro...you can turn it off with Start8 and you have a much better and leaner operating system. Too much negative hype is the cause...much of it to blame on some stupid decisions by Microsoft, but the core OS is fantastic.
Here's a chart showing where Microsoft makes its money. The Business division includes software assurance and other licensing, and cloud:
Internet based servers' market share can be measured with statistical surveys of publicly accessible servers, such as web servers, mail servers[26] or DNS servers on the Internet: the operating system powering such servers is found by inspecting raw response messages. This method gives insight only into market share of operating systems that are publicly accessible on the Internet.
There will be differences in the result depending on how the sample is done and observations weighted. Usually the surveys are not based on a random sample of all ip numbers, domain names, hosts or organisations, but on servers found by some other method.[ Additionally many domains and ip numbers may be served by one host and some domains may be served by several hosts or by one host with several ip numbers.

GET OUT OF MY BRAIN!!!!!
:)
I intend to do the same!
Check into running XP mode. The components are still available for download from Microsoft, but they no longer support it.
Wonder how many of those Windows 8 and 8.1 sales were made only because it was next to impossible to find a Win 7 machine for a while.
Nails every complaint I've ever heard.
Virtual PC was last updated in 2011. For the past seven years, Microsoft’s top virtualization product has been Hyper-V. It’s now available on Windows 8 and above running 64-bit OS with CPU’s supporting AMD-V or Intel VT-64 and SLAT. Meaning most sold today.
I saw W3Techs’ statistic and it leaves out a lot!
The vast majority of servers today are NOT, repeat NOT accessible from the Internet but are behind the firewall.
I tried to find statistics for file servers, fax servers, print servers, directory servers, authentication servers, and other infrastructure servers (interior DNS, DHCP, WINS, etc.) but cannot find them.
I think there are more servers behind the firewall than publicly exposed, by at least 75/25%. No way to prove that, but I thing it’s a pretty good SWAG. Can’t find meaningful statistics, though.
Why bother with 8.1 when Windows Nein is just around the corner .....
I notice Microsoft’s successful Operating Systems are always the ODD numbered versions.
Windows XP was Windows 5. A very successful product.
Windows Vista was Windows 6. The product sucked.
Then, the hugely successful Windows 7.
Now we have Windows 8, which is getting so-so responses.
Maybe Windows 9 will succeed...
Yeah, the old “Star Trek Movie” phenomenon ...
Actually, I’ll probably be getting a Win7 system soon, anticipating 9 which enhances that look & feel.
