Anyone who’s stepped through their doors knows it’s more expensive. 10 and 15 years ago, I ventured in 3 3 times for 3 specific items I had exhausted all other avenues to find. Haven’t been back since, though I will admit to driving by slowly to shake my head at the skinny sickly looking crowd who do shop there.

HEB is usually cheaper than Walmart for their canned goods. Walmart reduces their soon to expire meats whereas HEB doesn’t order enough meat to service their customers so never has to reduce their prices. They will have one or two beef roasts so you have to grab when it’s there. I’ve literally done a meet the meat dude in the back for a sneaked package of frozen fish and it caused an uproar at the cash register. HEB is beginning to not stock their lower priced brands and is on the fast track to becoming a more high dollar store and now feature delis and bakeries and such in their larger city stores. Sadly, in many small towns here, HEB it the only game in town where incomes are low so they are ignoring their customer base. Our store has poor management so entire sections can be totally empty. Two days ago, the entire dairy section was empty. Bread is usually half bare so you have to choose another brand and it’s been frozen. If they have canned peas (which I haven’t found in forever) then you better stock up because it’ll be months before you find them again. I seriously thought they’d quit making 20 Mule Team Borax 20 years ago until I saw it in the city last week so bought a box. I can’t remember why I needed it. It isn’t unusual for a customer to ask if you really need two whatevers and can they have one. I’m at the tipping point of taking my business 30 miles away to Walmart especially if HEB keeps adding more Whataburger items that no one buys. Really? They can stock high priced Whataburger frozen fries and mustard but can’t keep milk stocked? These days, grocery trips are third world shopping adventures.
