Word For The Day, Wednesday, October 8, 2014-- Pavlovian

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Pavlovian [pav-loh-vee-uh n]

hear it pronounced

adjective

1. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of Pavlov or his work, especially of experiments in which he elicited predictable responses from laboratory animals.
2. (of a reaction or response) automatic; involuntary

Origin: 1931, from the theories, experiments, and methods of Russian physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936), especially in connection with the salivary reflexes of dogs in response to mental stimulus of the sound of a bell.

Pavlov was a Russian physiologist who studied the digestive system of dogs, investigating the nervous control of salivation and the role of enzymes. His experiments showed that if a bell is rung whenever food is presented to a dog, the dog will eventually salivate when it hears the bell, even if no food is presented. This demonstration of what is known as a conditioned response prompted later scientific studies of human and animal behavior.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.

"I wanted a bigger window, but with our cold winters DH nixed that idea."

South-facing window, with all the best insulation features; triple-glazing, UV filters and stuff, and interior insulating shutters to close at night.

Solar gain beats nocturnal loss.

With proper insulation and studied insolation, any spot south of the Arctic Circle can be made habitable. (Speaking for the Northern Hemisphere in this instance.)

Actually the company I’ve been with for 6 years has cut back for ACA and eliminated 20% of their employees. I got laid off. I’m glad because the company sucks. Looking for something new but taking some down time to rearrange my brain. Whats up with you?

"I got laid off. I’m glad because the company sucks. Looking for something new but taking some down time to rearrange my brain. Whats up with you?"

That happened to me thirteen years ago.

That's when I decided to do what I wanted to do, what I enjoyed, rather than what might pay best. I don't make much money, but the stresses of the job don't bother me. I just go there for the physical activity.

It keeps me active, while I think about ways to entertain myself. It's similar to writing; I do it because I enjoy it, not because it's my job to do it.

The new word is up, by the way.

I’m leaning the same way as you. I’d like to do free lance creative writing like print ads and even story boards for commercials. I know I can sell it but I don’t know a simple cheap way to protect the intellectual property until I sell it. I don’t see a new WFTD post!

"I know I can sell it but I don’t know a simple cheap way to protect the intellectual property until I sell it."

The protection for that is the threat of litigation. If you have a way to track your property, that should be protection enough.

The main principle is to do something you enjoy. That way, you can be enthusiastic about it, and that sells. It also means that what you're doing isn't really work, so you can do a lot of it without stressing about it.

No shutters. House is mid century modern....we call them ski slopes as the pitch of the roof on one side goes down to the first story and on the second it’s at the second story.

I try to write one Before I look at what anyone else has written so I’ just on my creativity.

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t.
