Why is I. S. I. S. pronounced as isis, but U. S. A. is pronounced U-S-A?

Yes, it was before WWII if I recall. At that time Japanese goods were considered shoddy and second rate, and that’s how they got aroud that issue.

CC

(pronounced “see-see” =^)

Why do they say GSW on TV, when it’s easier to say gun shot wound?

My high school choir director, back in the day, said he took a chorus to Austria, I think, for an international competition. In the award ceremony, they all waited and looked around until they realized that they had won. They were confused because the announcer kept saying the winner was “oooosah”, not u.s.a.

Because isis is a word, and oosa sounds silly.

We also used to say U S S R, rather than usser ... and U K rather than uck, and P R C rather than prick ....

we say F B I, but pronounce nasa.

Because Isis is an actual word and Oosah is not.

Because we started pronouncing it U-S-A many years before we got into this damnable habit of giving everything an acronym that the subject sound innocuous, e.g., The JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act.
