Word For The Day, Thursday, Rocktober 9, 2014 – obloquy

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

obloquy \AH-bluh-kwee\ , noun
1. a strongly condemnatory utterance : abusive language
2. the condition of one that is discredited : bad repute

Example sentences:
The manager walked quickly back to the dugout as insults and obloquy rained down from the stands.

"Because of the stigma associated with drug convictions, such an indictment could be tantamount to a life sentence of obloquy in terms of future employment."
--Floral Park Dispatch, January 15, 2014

Etymology:
English speakers can choose from several synonyms to name a tongue-lashing. Abuse is a good general term that usually stresses the anger of the speaker and the harshness of the language, as in "scathing verbal abuse." Vituperation often specifies fluent, sustained abuse; "a torrent of vituperation" is a typical use of this term. Invective implies vehemence comparable to vituperation, but may suggest greater verbal and rhetorical skill; it may also apply especially to a public denunciation, as in "blistering political invective." Obloquy, which comes from the Late Latin ob- (meaning "against") plus loqui (meaning "to speak"), suggests defamation and consequent shame and disgrace; a typical example of its use would be "subjected to obloquy and derision."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

No one said “I quit” for him, whether they pressured him or not, he still did it.

I didn’t see anything amiss at first-I’m Catholic, he’s the pope, etc-but his upbringing in a microcosm of socialist propaganda has left its mark on him, and it isn’t good-this holy father does not seem to realize that sin is right in front of him yelling here I am-isn’t that what history says happened in Nazi Germany, too?

Isn’t he quite ill? I cannot blame him for stepping down, regardless of his reasons. He alone knows why he felt compelled to do it. It is not his fault they swung the pendulum wildly the other way to replace him.

Thank you! Every time I see falling numbers of a democrat incumbent, it is schadenfreude-I’m particularly delighted that Mary Landrieu is in trouble.

He does look like Napoleon Dynamite-what has the world come to when a little wuss like that can cause a scandal involving prostitutes? Even at my youngest and most idealistic, I would not have done him with someone else’s...

Obama suffers from obloquy,
a case of arrogance as in me, me, me...
he ran for President on a whim,
thinks it’s all about him,
now he’s exposed for all to see.

On the way home, I stopped at the dollar store for pet treats, bought Husky girl a new stuffed toy to maul, and two fake, feathered cloth birds on a string at the end of a plastic stick-$1.50 each is reasonably priced pet amusement.

Yeti boy claimed one right away, dragging it off-I put the other one on the seat of a chair and Titus and Midget girl were batting it, till Titus took it away from her, jumped onto the chair and laid down on the toy, licking the feathers to taunt her-Midget seems to be weighing her chances of getting the thing back, just staring at him...

I primed the wood trim around the new front door today. Looks pretty good white...so I am thinking it should all stay white....since I can’t come up with a color that I want.

No ping list anywhere is worth spit unless Conspiracy Guy's name is on it, even the ones he doesn't like.

White does take a lot of maintenance outdoors, here at least-I’d get some samples, hold them up to the white frame, and see which color the frame sets off best. The fad out here seems to be to either stain or paint the door a bright color in a white or light neutral frame-and it does give the illusion of dimension to something that is flat.

I would go with bright red. Love neutral colored houses with a red door.
