I think you have a point. For a man to have companionship, sex, and good cooking, and cleaning, 50 and more years ago, he had to get married. Even if he was unattractive and a low earner. And there were less than attractive women with other flaws who would marry him and these two would give each other a decent life or a so-so life.

with other alternatives to marriage for both these men and women above, they may choose not to settle for each other.

There was also a lot of social pressure to get married, no woman wanted to be referred to as an “Old Maid” or a “Spinster.”
