The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Good evening, radio listeners, with a pumpkin on the steps, the World Series about to begin, and temps down to the 40’s Fall is in full swing in the mid Atlantic.

We have a good lineup...Have Gun Will Travel is kinda new, Suspense is a crowd pleaser and we end with MGM Theater (love the intro music).

How you doing out there?

Hi, Vision! We have our pumpkins on the porch, too, but it's warm here, a beautiful day.

Yesterday evening I made the orange sweet rolls, and they turned out wonderfully! So, dense and moist--perfect!

They didn't look quite like the pretty picture on the cover of the cookbook, but they looked good enough and tasted even better.

Hi Gina, very nice! It looks like the difference is a little more time in the oven and lighting.

I’m off for a ride. Been cooking this weekend?

I didn’t want to over-bake them. I had already baked them quite a bit longer than the recipe called for. We decided that to make the photograph more appealing, they likely used a kitchen torch to achieve the lovely brown singe on the top edges of the rolls and to further melt the icing.

Yea probably.

I did food wishes asparagus souffle and speides. The speides are a major hit, you need to try it. It's basically a great marinade for anything.

I’ve never heard of speides and don’t even know how to pronounce it. What is it?

We barbecued chicken and potatoes last night. Tonight, it’s Walmart deli pizza.

What does it taste like? Did you do the day-long marinade? That’s a complex marinade, and I can’t imagine the flavor of all those ingredients together. I’ll bet it’s great.

Wait. Never mind. I just remembered you said you did the asparagus, not the chicken...

I did two recipes, a chicken dish and an asparagus dish.

The marinade is wonderful. It's tangy, garlicky, herby, a hint of sweetness. A must try. Yes 24 hours.
