Then, what's driving gasoline down ?

The price of oil which is being artificially manipulated by the Saudis in order to make US drilling less profitable thus less attractive.

Time to start mixing TVP with your ground beef to stretch it.

Did your income go up 17%? Mine didn’t. It decreased.

Hamburger is a luxury. I went a year without buying any due to the price. Then really wanted some a few weeks ago. It was $17 for the 5 lb tube of 70%. That’s $3.40 lb. for 30% fat. I haven’t seen the 10 tubes for a couple of years so guess they’re too embarrassed to sell those. Imagine the fainting spells at the meat case over $34 “cheap” ground beef.

When cooking up a tube of ground beef, I drain it into a bowl. When it’s chilled the stock and fat separate so the stock can be dumped into a freezer container that canned veggies are drained into for future use in soups. Don’t pour all these down the drain. Why buy beef and veg stock when it’s already in your hands. Be frugal. Every little bit helps.

I’m not to the point of saving the fat for homemade soap but I have hard copy recipes ready when the time comes.

Ours doesn’t have the “expires tomorrow” section anymore. Hasn’t had in years. But then they don’t order enough meat (or anything else) to meet the average demand. You honestly need to know the secret code word to get whatever is in the sales circular and even then you’re likely to get the “it wasn’t on the truck” response. Our one and only chain store, HEB, never puts out more than 4 packages of each cut, if you’re lucky. People used to spend time comparing prices but for the past year or two they’ve given up and just thrown whatever willy nilly in their basket and thankful they got that.

It’s the same story all over the store so there are empty shelves everywhere so you grab what can because it won’t be there next week. They can’t even keep their store brand stocked. I haven’t seen their pork ‘n beans for two years. It’s rare if you get to the check out before another customer asks if you really need those 2 gallons of milk or whatever and can they have one. Do NOT expect to fill your grocery list even with the most basic of basics. If there’s a national coupon, they’ll pull the product. No one uses coupons there anymore because there’s always some “problem” with them at the register. When you’re the only game in town, you can pull whatever bs you want. Scary to think what it’ll be like when SHTF.
