I stood alongside people of color across the nation as we celebrated America's first inauguration of a black president . . . to show, finally, that we are more concerned about who is the most qualified man for the job, regardless of race or age.

He intended this as satire, didn't he?

It would be wonderful if that we're true, but the reality is that if this same person, Obama, ran as a Republican the left would have taken him apart. He would have been labeled an ‘Uncle Tom’. His white mother, prep school education, and growing up with his white grandparents would have been used by the left to characterize him as out of touch with the average American black experience, and likely the left would have challenged his eligibility to run based on his Kenyan father. That's just for starters.

The author should also remember that Obama could have never been elected if the only people voting for him were ‘people of color’. He became president because a lot of white people voted for him. Lots of people voted for him because they believed his rhetoric, were swayed by his ability to sound measured and reasonable, and bought into his promise that his administration would be beyond politics and would be transparent. He's lost many of those voters because now he has a record, and they don't like what he's done with the country. His skin color is the same, but he's lost their support.

Oh, and when Bob Dole ran the left did make age an issue, and the left has often used the term ‘old white guys’ to characterize their Republican opponents. Clearly that is putting politics at the level of race and age.

It's a little too subtle for some of us.
