Ah yes, the old “typewriter Torqueflight”. Your description of the launch is perfect!

I had a Ford Maverick V-8 small block. I loved to street drag, my trick was to flirt with the guy in the car at the red lite and then floor it when the light turned green, while still looking at him and not the light. I never lost.

My brother used to take the family car, an Impala station wagon to State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge on Saturday nights. My dad could never figure out why that car blew through three transmissions and two engines. Finally, one Sunday as we were getting ready for Church, dad noticed some chalk marks on the windshield that my brother had forgotten to wash off. Busted. He told Dad that the numbers was the car's time at the dragway and offered to clean them off before church, but Dad said, to let them stay. Ha

Drag racing?? My Ambassador wagon was fast... my friends and I used to race on what is now I 384 before it was opened... mostly I lost, but I had fun. I had besides my Citation X11 (loaded), I had an Opel GT, Mustangs, a Vette, a Buick 225 and a Nova.

I had a Ford Maverick V-8 small block

I raise my coffee cup in silent salute to that memory.

Dad had a 1974 4 door Maverick with a 302 2 barrel. It was one of the most impressive sleepers ever to cruise by Farmer's parking lot.

They'd tell me it was leaving a trail of sparks when doing burnouts with the studded snow tires dad put on it, but all I cared about was that it was a rat racing demon on the gravel country roads.

Mass quantities of fun! And one of the many reasons I got sent away to school...

I street raced my Chevelle all the time. Hard to tell if your strategy would have worked against me. Probably depends on what you looked like :)

The last mill I built was a 400. Has its problems but its a beast once you rid it of 70s smog crap that never worked anyway. Just a stroked Cleveland. And that is a beautiful thing ;)

"THAT MOMENT WHEN"

Comes when everyone else is rhapsodizing over '68 & later boulevard cruisers when your first was a '51 Merc eventually running through a third junk yard flathead.
Next came a '53 Ford with a 312/4Bbl from a '58 Turnpike cruiser (great sleeper), then a '58 Fairlane & 312.
Only new cars I've ever owned were a '66 Falcon "Sport" and '71 or 2 Comet "GT". Comet was first automatic and first not to leave U-joints scattered across So Cal and parts of Texas and Arizona.

Oh!
Hollywood & Sunset Blvd (Tiny Naylor's), Colorado Blvd (Bob's Big Boy at each end & in between, plus a nice strip of freeway for "real" racing), selected Foster Freeze, and A&Ws.

Forgot to mention, that ‘78 Cougar had a ‘Moonroof’. Sort of a gold coloured glass that I could open up with a switch. For some reason most people riding with me wanted to open that up and stand on the seat and stick out through the roof.
