The Election that Changed the Country (Vanity)
(none) | Nov 5, 2014 | (self)

Posted on 11/05/2014 3:28:34 AM PST by BobL

While it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of yesterday's victories, the only reason that we won so decisively yesterday was because a small group of DETERMINED REPUBLICANS in Virginia decided that the country couldn't take anymore of Eric Cantor, and somehow, beyond all expectations and all precedent, sent him packing to K-Street, on June 10, 2014. That set the stage for yesterday.

Earlier, the US Senate had passed a horrendous Amnesty Bill (the prior summer, 2013), worse than anything than even Bush had pushed for. The House Leadership was ready to act on the advice of their consultants (most of them gay, by the way) and "put this issue behind them" by passing their own Amnesty, and then reconciling with the Senate version. Eric Cantor was LEADING THE CHARGE in that direction - he was the #2 Republican in the House, the House Majority Leader, and he had the votes to pass it.

But as the months rolled along since the Senate Bill, Cantor had a bad feeling - he was worried about his own primary (and other Republican primaries) if they pushed through Amnesty early, as the Tea Party was ready to strike and throw them on to the streets. So the plan was to keep quiet on Amnesty, until the primaries were over.

But a funny thing happened on the way to permanently changing the demographic (and electoral) composition of this country. A Mr. David Brat, a political novice, with virtually no funding put together a bunch of grass-roots Tea Party Republicans and DEFEATED Mr. Cantor in his own Primay. And all of those Republicans that were ready to follow him off the cliff suddenly said NO THANKS. Amnesty was killed for 2014 (and yes, it is really dead).

And what is my point - the surest way to keep Republicans from coming out yesterday was to pass Amnesty, as what would be the point of voting for the people that just handed your country and your children's future over to a bunch of madmen? But it didn't happen, and the Republicans, contrary to what their advisers (most of them gay, by the way) promised, were REWARDED with a historic victory. Even here in Texas, we won our statewide races by about 20 points (or more) each, a HUGE MARGIN for this state (a record, in fact), and Dan Patrick, the most partisan person on Illegals also won by 20 points and will now be our Lt. Governor, considered either equal in power to the Governor or even greater in power, as he also runs the State Senate...there was no downside at all by opposing Amnesty and supporting secure borders.

That’s a nice story, but it’s a novel, right? It certainly bears little resemblance to what really happened. Cantor beat himself, and Brat had NO help from the Tea Party. The press tried to whip up the immigration angle, but that wasn’t the reason Dave Brat won.

Good post.

Crossroads (which is legendarily the place where one sells his soul) won’t like it.

this mid-term was not just a wave, but it was a restraining order issued by the majority against the liberals.

Sorry but Brat had PLENTY OF HELP from the Tea Party, but it was only the local Tea Party types - the national Tea Party and all other conservative groups wrote him off (what you’re saying).

As to why Cantor lost, I simply do not buy the OUT OF TOUCH argument that you’re trying to make - for if that was the case, Pelosi, Boener, and just about every other leader in both parties would be losing left and right - as being a leader pretty much assures very little attention back home.

As to Amnesty, it really didn’t matter, AT ALL, whether that was the deciding issue, and the libs did everything they could to support your contention that it wasn’t a major issue - but NONE OF THAT MATTERED once Cantor lost. The other Republicans saw Cantor get thrown on his ass and they perceived that Amnesty is radioactive. So no Amnesty and a HUGE VICTORY yesterday.

2014 Midterms proved there's no downside to opposing Amnesty and supporting secure borders.

Well-stated----it appears even Sen Mitch McConnell got the message----mentioned secure broders as a priority in his victory speech.

Sorry, you need to research this more. The defeat of Cantor and, prior to that, the RINOs in the local GOPe machinery, was done by local constitutional conservatives who tired of the RINO lies & duplicity. It was basically a well thought out uprising by local conservatives.

These LOCAL conservatives fought and took back the local GOP (along with the Uber-duplicitous Cantor’s seat) from the corrupt GOPe. We owe these Virginia patriots a lot. And we should be copying their strategy and tactics across our great nation.

Nice to hear. I’ve looked at enough polling to know that Amnesty is not a big issue for Hispanics, and they are actually with us on border security. It was INSANE for the Republicans to come so close to walking off that cliff, but thankfully that is over, for now.

By the way, in Texas, Republicans don’t win elections by 20% margins without tremendous Hispanic support, as in 45% or more...this was incredible election.

Nope. I was in the middle of it. Cantor was lazy, and instead of actually campaigning during the primary, decided since he had so much money he would just out ad Dave Brat. Bad move for Cantor. Since Brat was a newcomer with no record, Cantor didn't have much to work with in his ads, so he lied about the record of Brat. The folks who paid attention to the lies in his ads were exactly the same folks who rouse themselves to vote in primaries. Every time they heard another ad by Cantor calling Brat a liberal professor who helped Tim Kaine raise taxes, the more pissed off these folks got, because it wasn't true.

Do you understand? Cantor paid for his own loss.

Yes, there were local conservatives that were early Brat supporters and some of these folks may have been to a Tea Party rally, but while Brat asked for help from the Tea Party, they sent NOT ONE PENNY!

Immigration was but one talking point that Brat used in his stump speech, but it would be quite a stretch to call it a focus of his campaign.

I wasn’t there, but I have heard similar - basically that Brat was trying to not be single-issue. But the perception still held...Cantor was twisting arms for Amnesty, and he lost. Good enough for me.

If we’re going to change the country, we need to start with sealing off the border, dwindling down EBT & Food Stamps for the worthless of society, and deporting illegals by the millions back to their place of origin.

None of these will happen, so call me a pessimist, but we changed absolutely nothing with this “win”. I voted GOP, but they can still KMA.....

We do need to start though...and losing this election would still be a lot worse than winning (which is why you also voted Rep). We’ll see what they do...maybe they’ll show some gonads, now that they know that opposing Amnesty is not going to hurt them.

the election changes little - it’s now up to the elected to unite and start enacting the laws that we need.

when they seal the border that’ll help
when they stop obama that’ll help
when they repeal obamacare, that’ll help
when they CUT spending, that’ll help

until I see all this, then i remain unconvinced.

True, but we still have a chance. Had Amnesty passed, it would have been game over, without any way to ever recover. My point was that throwing out Cantor made Amnesty go away, for the time being.

Now Cruz is stronger, and so are conservatives (overall)...but I agree, they have to act, and let the country know EXACTLY WHERE the problem lies, rather than letting the Dems keep defining us.

I think the real story is that despite massive voter fraud the GOP still pulled it off. I’m amazed and very happy.
