I agree, there is no reason for an accidental discharge unless in the heat of an out of control situation.

No good reason, anyway. “Familiarity” leads to complacency. On autopilot, shooting the breeze, or otherwise not fully engaged in the simple task of making sure the weapon is safe, BEFORE starting to clean it.
