In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chiaroscuro \kee-ahr-uh-SKYOOR-oh\ noun
1. the distribution of light and shade in a picture.
2. Painting. the use of deep variations in and subtle gradations of light and shade, especially to enhance the delineation of character and for general dramatic effect: Rembrandt is a master of chiaroscuro.

Example sentences:
…film noir genealogies usually reduce Weimar cinema to German expressionism and German expressionism in turn to a catalogue of techniques including: 'foregrounded oblique objected, unbalanced compositions, irregular spatial arrangements, chiaroscuro lighting with a heavy play of shadows…'
-- Mark Bould, Film Noir: From Berlin to Sin City, 2005

Caravaggio, who was 38 when he died on a beach north of Rome in 1610, pioneered chiaroscuro, the painting technique of contrasting light and dark.
--New York Times, June 16, 2010

Etymology:
Chiaroscuro comes from the Italian words for "bright," chiaro, and "dark," oscuro. It entered English in the late 1600s.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Equal under the Law?
Nope. ObamaCARE is the chiaroscuro of Law.

"At the foundation of our civil liberties lies
the principle that denies to government officials
an exceptional position before the law and which
subjects them to the same rules of conduct
that are commands to the citizen."

Justice Louis D. Brandeis

I decided on an arty word for today but my computer mail program kept closing out each time I was on the last step of setting up the thread. After the 7th time, I tried to do it another way.

The political chiaroscuro between the Republican and Democrat parties has never been more dramatic.

I first encountered this word in a book about Led Zeppelin I read in my teenage years. It’s a good word to describe the way a lot of “metal” bands will counter the light against the heavy; playing the same musical theme as acoustic lightness and then with amplified bombast.

Now, it just makes me think of the wonderful Brazilian meat buffets.
