Unlike many Freepers, while I'm pro 2nd Amendment, I'm no expert on guns, so I'm, going to turn to those of you who are more knowledgeable, for some advice. See further "setup" to my questions regarding a good "snake gun" below.
I’m lost...what is 2-4-D?
My herper friends keep bottles of vinegar or alcohol handy in case one of their animals gets nippy.
You don’t want to pry off a valuable snake, lest you damage its teeth, so, a spritz of nasty tasting stuff makes them let go.
Woops.
How embarrassing.

Yea shot shells are good for snakes and rodents close up...

My best friend lives in south-central Virginia.
She walks her dog pack on the old logging roads every day and until it’s too cold, they all must step over or around the Eastern Diamondbacks who sun themselves on the trail.
[she once saw an albino one]
She’s never had to harm one except for a single exception.
Her area has been under drought for years and food is scarce for prey and predator, alike.
A singular squirrel took up residence on her porch, having been attracted by her apple tree.
One day, she and her family came home to large rattler on the porch, who was seeking to get that squirrel, since other prey was very scarce.
She also has a small frog pond nearby so it may have been seeking water, as well.
They tried to shoo it away but it kept coming back and one day, it lunged at her son.
They hated to do it but they shot it.
I could not fault them because they had neither the equipment or expertise to bag and relocate it.
For myself, I simply make my property attractive to rat snakes.
They eat other snakes and it seems other snakes know this and stay away.
In 24 years, I have never seen rattler or copper, here, although I know for a fact there are lots of them on the ridges and mountains around me.

So the rattlers ARE here, LOL.
That stuff’s going to hit the fan down here one day...no one can convince me that Muslim compound isn’t here for a reason.
I just hope they don’t detonate a belt in the Appomattox Walmart or Kroger while your friend or I happen to be there.

I found a YouTube video that reviews those rounds. The pellets are tiny (#12 shot,) and you have to stand within a couple feet from the snake to shoot it. This can be done only to a snake that is made from plastic :-)
A far better choice is to use a 9mm snakeshot. The advantage of that is much higher power, and the fact that a 9mm (or similar) handgun can be used for anything. A hunter can use it to dispatch a snake, to shoot wounded game, and for self-defense. A .22LR is not very good for any of that. Here is a review of a 9mm snake shot. Note that even a 9mm shell has to be fired from 5 to 10 feet away, or else you won't get much shot onto the target. Experience with a .22LR shot is understandably worse.
Still, I might want to get a box of each next time I buy something - just for a test.

She called the DNR about the albino one and they blew her off...said there weren’t any, there.
I had the same experience with a moth that is common here every summer but the state entomologist is so adamant that “we don’t have those here!” that he cussed me out when I sent him several photos of them hanging on the machine shop walls.
Experts.
Gotta love ‘em.

Think Agent Orange.
Dark thick body, swimming on top of the water with the head a few inches above the water, triangular head, two fangs and a white mouth, curious and aggressive. I grew up around the swamp. Those were water moccasins.
I can get along with rattlesnakes but water moccasins are not your friend. When you are in a pirogue (a small dugout canoe) they can easily come over the side as you have just a few inches of free board. When you see one coming you do not hit it with the paddle as it might really piss them off. You put the paddle in the water in a position that the snake will swim over it. When he does you pull the paddle as hard as you can in an arc. It will throw the snake many yards away. At this point he is really pissed off but does not come back.
I loved the swamp when I was a kid. It was a kid's paradise but you need to know what you are doing. You can get hurt and worse if you are not careful.
1. Do not swim where there are alligators.
2. If you accidentally come across an alligator nest get the hell away quick. Mama gators are not nice.
3. Look out for water moccasins.
4. Know where the hell you are.
5. Tell someone where you are going.
6. Do not drink the water.
7. Bring Bug Spray, a lot.
8. Alcohol is not your friend until you are back at camp.
9. How do you get back if your motor fails on your boat?

Thanks for the video links, we enjoyed. Impressed with the two yard effective snake defense range with a LCR. We’re using Federal 25 grain #12 shot 22LR, and we harvest doves at 20 yards with a rifle. We liked the 9mm Luger shot shells demo, we’re going to pick up a box tonight.

2-4-5-T has an impurity that occurs in manufacture called Dioxin, which is one of the deadliest carcinogenic chemicals known.

It could be best summarized as follows - "If you can't steal it, dominate it, screw it or eat it, then kill it."
