Forget the .22 and go for the Judge. Especially if you are dealing with poisonous snakes. Fires a 410 shotgun shell cartridge, and is the very definition of a snake gun.

I fear the flinch factor on those for non handgun experineced shooters would cause a lot of missing.

For that single purpose, I'd personally stick to the .22 rimfire with the CCI shotshells you mentioned your dad used. Those rounds are pretty much worthless for anything else, but great for snakes because most shots are going to be short range and you don't want to be dealing with a lead bullet that could hit a rock or something. Also, someone else may weigh in, but I don't "think" those rounds will cycle a semi-auto so a revolver would be preferable (someone correct me if I'm wrong, I heard this second-hand somewhere). There isn't much you can do about the report on a pistol, they are all loud, especially revolvers. That is true even for pellet guns. The only way to go stealth really is use a shovel.

Aguila does make a low velocity .22 round that has no powder, it operates strictly from the primer charge. Those are still pretty loud in a pistol though and you still have the risk of ricochet... that would worry me especially shooting up close like that.
