Word of advice, never give to poor at your own turf. They will harass you even more. If you do give, give someplace where you are not daily.

You need to use your talents to provide effective help for others. Giving money on the street to those who will likely end up drinkng it is not “help.”

I do not give. will not give. since the paralegal told me that she gave to the guy who stood outside of noon Mass, whom I also gave to, and then when she stopped her harangued her. haven’t given since. we took 4 bags of groceries to church for the food drive yesterday. donate clothing almost weekly, but $ into the hands of what appears to be a drunk/drug addict, cannot be what Christ intended IMO. I also REFUSE to give $ to requests made by store clerks to round up etc. for various charities.

I used the wrong term - it is the idea of “trickle” I ws referring to. Liberals don’t believe that putting money into the economy in the form of jobs “trickles down” but they use the exact same idea that welfare money, added to the economy is spread around. Why would it help the economy if it came from welfare but not from paychecks? Of course we know that welfare money is OUR money - but the idea behind it (if you pretend like welfare is earned money from the private sector) should be the same theory

Look around for something to give to. Graymore has a program for alcoholics with a 99% success rate, I gave to them. Salvation Army does a lot to help the homeless, too. And they try to fix their souls, too.

A few nights ago I made a Kohl’s run and on my way home, at a four way stop still inside the shopping center, I saw a youngish man standing with some kind of begging sign - but I was stunned to see two small children sitting on the curb (in the dark with landscaping almost obscuring them!) - it was coldish too. I wanted to slap him. No way he lives in this area and isn’t eating - We have NO low income apartments anywhere nearby and it isn’t even that close to houses so I doubt he walked there. He could have kept those kids in his car parked right behind the landscaping but he was using them as props. I wish I had contacted the police because that dark corner could have easily meant those kids could have been harmed. Someone turning sharply could have gone over that curb.....

unforgiveable use of children. I see the begging as a scam. there are many accounts of people following those types and seeing them get into a car and drive to a nice house. I cannot help but be skeptical of individuals begging.

I have to believe there are enough charities out there to help people who want help. If people persist on the street that is because they do not want to change or to accept “rules” that their would-be helpers would impose on them.

I have given coins to people, especially women, in Latin American countries. But that is different.

You need to start with the assumption that every business owner is evil and greedy. So making things easier for him only means he will hoard the extra money, piling it up and rolling around in it a la Scrooge McDuck.

On the other hand, welfare and unemployment benefits will get spent cause people need to eat.

Therefore, the best way to stimulate the economy is to give welfare.

poverty in the 3d world is a completely different story, and those people I do believe are in dire straits. Many have said that the people who are on the street have mental issues and their numbers increased when they set them loose from the institutions.

The first time I heard the word propinquity was while watching "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" in 1959.

L to R Maynard G. Krebs, Dobie Gillis, Zelda Gilroy

Zelda assured Dobie that he would eventually come to realize his love for her through the influence of "propinquity": because he was Gillis and she was Gilroy, they were always going to be seated together through high school and college and would eventually fall in love.

Obama’s hold on his minions
Is obvious and unbreakable-
They all march in lockstep
The propinquity unmistakable

Every time someone dares
To rebel and cause a fuss
A place is cleared for them
Under Obama’s crowded bus

Chuck Hagel is the latest-
He probably won’t be last
Obama has become Nixonian
But with a brand new cast...

The puppy kindergarten people sound strange-what are they going to do with just the dog owners-have some kind of an orientation? It isn’t as if they are holding a seminar or something-these are dogs-not new employees...

Tis the season to go scamming-falalala and all that s***...

When I worked in the city, my co-workers and I saw the fake beggars-with and without kids-getting into and out of their nicer cars than we drove all the time, every year starting as soon as cold weather came.

They used to come into our offices, mistakenly believing we were a place to get food stamps or some other welfare because they saw disabled people coming in from the parking lot, never mind that the sign clearly said workers comp management. They would demand that the receptionist let them see a case manager-it was surreal...
