I realize that this is a local paper, but there was a day when no self respecting Associated Press editor would permit a story to lead with “UAB”. He/she would insist the the copy start with “the University of Alabama at Birmingham. They could have been talking about the University of Ali Baba.
With the business implosion of print media, I think most of this stuff is written by folks making little more than min wage.
Rumor has 9-3 Memphis as a possibility. I would prefer a cupcakier cupcake for the first game. It is scheduled for Nashville. Would be interesting for UT-Knoxville to play Memphis in Nashville.
Amen, except that tax money is also swindled by many programs. It is also a scandal that illiterate athletes are masqueraded as scholars and elevated as representatives of educational institutions. The farce has now gone so far that it has become difficult to enjoy what has devolved into another professional sport.
I know I am almost alone in saying this, but schools and colleges should be purely academic.

My school, Long Beach State, dropped football in 1991. They could not compete with USC and UCLA 25 miles up the freeway.
LB State had to play body bag games against Clemson, Michigan, Oregon, Miami,in the last few years just to survive. Not even the legendary George Allen could revive the program.
