No equipment is needed to sit and stand without any support
People can score a maximum of 10 points, with 1 point deducted for putting a hand or leg for stability, and half a point docked for wobbling
Patients who scored fewer than eight points, were twice as likely to die within the next six years, compared with people with more perfect scores
Study claims that musculoskeletal fitness, as assessed by the simple test, can be used to predict death in 5180-year-olds

What do I score if someone has to help me off the floor?

OK. The diagram didn’t mention that you must cross your legs.
Sitting down is no problem, standing back up... I doubt I could ever do that.
Is this one of those things that women can do but men can’t due to center of gravity?

I’m not sure very many healthy, thin older people could do the stand up portion this test. I’m not sure I could have done the stand up part when I was in my 30’s and running 2-3 miles a day and weighed 175 pounds. That move screams reconstructive knee surgery for most people.

Same here. Haven’t been able to do that for over 40 years. I’m still here. I think!

I wonder if the doctor can do it?
To: BunnySlippers
I’d blow my knees out on the way down, then my spine would lock up when my butt hit the floor.
The only way I’d get back up is with the aid of two EMT’s and a stretcher.
Nobody I know over the age of 18 could do this without at least one “steadying” hand.
I’m only 20 lbs overweight, and in excellent health, so the veracity of the longevity claim made is questionable.

I couldn’t do this when I was 18 and I was a star athlete in high school. LOL!

I'm in fantastic shape at the moment--I ride horses hard all day, I hike, do heavy farm work, and despite asthma can run and jump like a kid. I don't have a pound of extra weight. But I can't get up from a crossed-leg position. At all. Hopeless. I'm just stuck down there. In order to get up smoothly, I have to move one leg so that my feet are flat on the floor, not resting sideways on the ankles; from a flat-footed crouching position it's easy. Can't understand how one could push up from the sides of the feet or the outer ankles. Guess I'm just going to die.

That wasn’t me doing it. I’m not even going to attempt such a feat.
I’d never get back on my feet.

Back in high school, the ski team coach challanged us to put on/take off our pants, socks and shoes while standing on one foot.
Every once in awhile I try that still - getting tougher! But I bet if I tried doing it all the time the strength and balance would come back.

If sitting “Indian style” (or as my kids call it now, criss cross apple sauce, so as not to offend Indians), can I twirl around when I stand? makes it much easier.
