As you heat things up, they change colors. Even here on Earth, e.g., as you heat something up, first it is “red hot,” then “white hot,” then “blue hot,” etc. Very large stars burn through their hydrogen fuel at mind numbing rates, and thus are very, very hot.

Why is it blue?

Stars with surface temperature cooler than the sun are reddish, stars with surface temperature warmer than the sun are blueish.

IIRC this is the last gasp of a star’s lifespan before it runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself and becomes a white dwarf, if it’s big enough possibly even a black hole.

Correct. That is just a NASA .jpg file. Don’t know where the mother link is.

I would also counsel an unlimited supply of hot coffee for the roadtrip, too! ;-)

It’s burning at the highest temperatures stars burn at.

If you took any chemistry, you would have seen the same effect as the Bunsen burner.

“Goodness that is big.

Why is it blue?”

It’s a she, and it’s a glandular problem.

That is just an artist’s rendering, depicting what a typical supergiant blue star would look like and how it’s size compares to our solar system. These things are scattered throughout the galaxy. IIRC, one or two of them are close enough to Earth to pose a danger when they eventually go supernova.

Yup, something that size will become a black hole at the end of its short life.
