TENAFLY — Pressured by parents, school district officials are considering lowering the stress of homework with such measures as homework-free nights and vacations, and giving students more information about the demands they will face in choosing courses.

The district also will organize workshops for parents on reducing children's stress.

The measures are being taken after a group of high school parents confronted the school board, arguing that homework is wreaking havoc on their children's lives.

Homework is ridiculous. My 1st grader gets hw almost every night. Growing up I don’t remember having any until at least 4th/5th grade.

Meanwhile, South Korean parents secretly pay teachers to be HARDER on their children.

Developing a work ethic is too much White Privilege and TEA Party talk.

A good reason for private and/or home schooling. No more public school BS.

When I was in school, all years from 1991 to 2004, it wasn’t that bad. I’m guessing it probably got 100x as worse since I’ve been out of school.

These poor kids have no idea what it’s like to be able to go out and play with other kids when they’re out of school. Now, they’re all inside playing video games, using smart phones and tablets, developing multiple health problems.

When I was a kid, I didn’t play video games that much, because I preferred going outside.

It’s reasonable to expect a couple hours of homework a night. Kids are usually out of school by around 2:30pm.

i had homewrk in 2nd grade. usually handwriting stuff. i had homework in elementary school. didn’t spend hours a night doing it.

what i didn’t have is the internet, my own smartphone, managed play schedules, and unlimited tv time.

i also had teachers who taught properly using effective methods. and was not indoctrinated by pc bullcrap. i played kickball, dodge ball, drew war battles at school doodling, had a pocketknife with me, and had snowball fights and where the playground was plowed, played king of the mountain. none of us were on ritalin.

I was always resistant to homework, and shirked it habitually. When I was a TA for freshman Physics, it relieved me that the homework load was light, and considered to be a study aid, with credit given for handing it in, ( although we corrected the answers. ) The lab assignments, far from requiring elaborate write-ups, were required to be completed in lab, in the student’s lab notebook which remained in the lab ( although the students were ALLOWED to return to the lab to complete the experiment, if they wished. )

Well, I still feel that the students are in school all day, so why can’t they do their larnin’ there, you know? I guess you’re going to have some homework, but it seems to turn into some status thing, that a course must have a heavy homework load to be taken seriously.

Well that was many, many years ago-——things are very different now.

(Just teasing.)

Where did I use the words “common core” or say anything about 8 hours (seriously?) of homework? The Koreans are already eating our lunch and having been stationed there, it doesn’t surprise me. They were a third-world country when I was there and now they are the technology and cultural leaders of the world. It’s not an accident.

What does that say when quality of education is going down yet homework hours are going up?

My daughter is averaging about 3 hours/night, including week-ends. When I was in high school, in the 70s, I probably put in 3-4 hours my senior YEAR and still CLEP’d out of 46 credits of college.

She also gets off the bus at 4:15.

I’ll add the only useful homework she gets is in Calculus. Most of her home work is working on mandatory senior projects and English class BS assignments.
