Well, yes, I find it sort of upsetting. Sony is a global company, I mean they are HUGE (and series too!). But they were not able to prevent this cyber attack.
I don’t really care about them, but it makes me feel rather insecure. Were they that sloppy? Who else is sloppy? My bank?
You know what I’m saying?
They keep saying it was “malware” but that typically refers to viruses (that disable parts of a computer/data) or programs that use other peoples’ computers as “zombies/drones/slaves” to do other things elsewhere.
This was data (financial data, communication data, and intellectual property (i.e. FULL movies online)) that was COMPROMISED.
It was hacking more than it was “malware” infection.
There is a HUGE onslaught of hacking of late. I've had to completely address and update security lately. Everyone should. Watch alerts and take them seriously. ANYTHING online is at risk.
What you should really watch out for is where you swipe your card. Retailers have been getting hit with regularity over the past couple years with quite a bit of data breach. If at all possible, use you “bank card” as credit vice atm/debit. There at least is some recourse should your data be compromised and your account used illegally. If you can swing it, it is also a good idea to cancel out your current card from time to time and request a new card. I try to do that every year at least (usually just after the holidays are over). The only downside is I am without a card for a week or so and I have to plan accordingly.
