“•That N Korea could hack an American company this bad”

Just a nit, but wasn’t it Sony, a Japanese company, that was hacked? Or was it their US subsidiary?

Wouldn’t any physical attack on our infrastructure constitute an act of war? How is this cyber attack different?

subject to lawsuits and potential judgments far exceeding the profitability of a single film. Ultimately, they make money off concession stand sales. Why risk an attack that could cost them tens of millions when there are plenty of other films for their audience to watch?

That's exactly right. After the threats' publication, a chain would be insane to screen it. Any clear-thinking owner or shareholder or insurer would absolutely prohibit it, because having been forewarned and going ahead anyway, the liability would be enormous. It would bankrupt the chain. Foregoing screening isn't cowardly, it's prudent.

I liked taildragger's suggestion that Sony just send it straight to the web.

A thousand dead Americans means Kim will be spending the rest of his days in China, and the Republic of Korea will cover the entire peninsula. A cyber-attack is not going to be the casus belli that gets Uncle Sam's Misguided Children to rearrange the the furniture in central Pyongyang, given the cost in men and material.

If memory serves correct, Sony owns one or two of those theater chains. I wonder if it is a crime to falsely claim a terrorist state is hacking you? Seems like pretty convenient timing of all this hype just before any reviews come out. I bet the movie is a stinker.

So what are the chances of a VIP Trip to North Korea?

Are you any good at basketball?

Looks like that will be a total loss.

Maybe not total.There's always HBO...DVDs...Bluerays.

I plan to buy this film when it comes out on Blueray *simply* because this psychopathic punk running NK doesn't want me to.And no,I never would have gone to a theater to see it because I don't go to movie theaters.

A lot is disturbing about this.... that N Korea could hack an American company this bad.

Far more disturbing is the possibility of them hacking our electric grid....our banking system....our DoD (google Gary McKinnon).

so if these hackers are really from or employed by North Korea ...and let’s say you have an actual violent attack on a theater showing this movie by some North Korean agent...then that’s an act of war ....or would have been before we were stupid...now it would be movieplace violence....

Yes, I’d say that would be an act of war. Right now, we’re only at the level of international espionage.

I'd say to Kim the same thing I'd say to Vlad. Guys you've got two years to do whatever you want without ANY fear of retaliation from the US. Won't happen. Have a field day. Go for it.

However, digital projection as it currently stands still requires physical media to be located at the theatre—the movie companies know that Internet delivery is too fraught with security issues. That’s why new movies shown on digital projectors are sent to the theater on actual hard disc drives.

This is why switching to digital projection was a BAD idea...at least a physical print, in a package posted to the theatre, would show obvious signs of tampering.

You mean there's no actual film on an actual projector anymore? I didn't know this! What is our world coming to?

But then, considering the prohibitive expense of movie tickets these days and that there are no theaters in my little town (though there used to be), I haven't seen a movie in a theater in over two decades and will probably never see another.

This not only shows weakness, but it will encourage others to make threats to get other movies pulled or just to spread disruption and make Americans feel vulnerable.

A semi loaded with fuel oil explosives could kill hundreds or thousands on a Saturday night. North Korean hit squads are known for their determination and skill. While this kind of attack might invite devastating retaliation from the US military up to and including the defenestration and execution of Kim Jong-un

Dream on. America hasn't been allowed to kick anyone around since WWII. And with Obama in office? Such an attack would probably be met with an apology for offending them.

The hackers are employed by the state of North Korea, and the movie makes fun of their dear leader.

Wrong title. The grandfather (Kim Il Sung) was the Great Leader. The son (Kim Jong Il) was the Dear Leader. The grandson (Kim Jong Eun) is the Great Successor.

What the next dictator will be called I don't know, though I highly expect the word "great" will be in it somewhere. Although . . . maybe he'll be the "Dear Successor?"
