what workers at Alrosa's Udachnaya diamond mine had unearthed was a 30mm rock that contained 30,000 diamonds - a conentration 1m times higher than normal.

Is that possible? 30,000 is a lot less than a million.

I’m not really sure why this is considered unusual.

I remember squeezing that rock from a large chunk of anthracite coal in my fist!
I gave it to my wife, Morgan Fairchild, and she must have tossed it aside.
Sigh, my super heart has been broken to pieces.

My only hope is to squeeze my heart back together while I’m still alive—grunt, oooh, uhhh, owie, Yikes!
Ah, there it is. Now, to win Morgan back ...

What part of them having to form instantaneously is usual?

They most likely formed in the mantel. Just where they formed there likely influenced the size.

Yes, possible, as in: normally, you’d have to gather 33 rocks that size just to find 1 diamond.

30000 diamonds / 15mm**2 * PI = 42 diamonds/mm3

So perhaps the normal concentration of diamonds in that mine’s ore is 0.000042441 diamonds / mm3 or 1 diamond per 23000 mm3 (about 2 level tablespoons) of ore.

They would seem to be very small diamonds however.

What does any of that have to do with "instantaneously"?

They could also be impact diamonds. Astroid hits earth creates great heat and pressure and the carbon in the ground or In the carbonaceous chondrite asteroid and diamonds are formed.
