So he would rather kill himself then get off the computer.

That's how you look at it.

To him? This was probably the one place in his life he felt welcomed, accepted, even valued. Writing fanfiction gave him access to a community. Probably even praise from his chosen associates. To face losing that? Sounds like he wasn't a well-adjusted person, and losing what was probably the only place that treated him like a valuable human being instead of a misfit, was his last straw.

Not hard to believe, but then, some of the most rewarding friendships of my life have started or been entirely online. To say nothing of finding my husband on FR...

He didn’t just quit the area where he was hanging out. He didn’t take a break. He didn’t Walk away from the computer and go read a book or volunteer at a soup kitchen or visit people at the nursing home.

He killed himself.
In my world, it’s a rather drastic way of dealing with an emotional setback involving a bunch of people you don’t know on the internet.
