Its a sunny Friday afternoon on the Brooklyn Bridge, yet Tarsila Ferreira is proudly holding what appears to be the shaft of an umbrella. Attached at the top: her smartphone.
Its a selfie stick, which the 22-year-old tourist from Boca Raton just got as a gift that morning.
Weve had a guy point at us and say, Hey, thats so cool, says Ferreira, who was traveling with her family and boyfriend.

Are you a better person for it?
What an arrogant, self-absorbed, narcissistic nation we've become.
P.S.: I wonder who they voted for? </rhetorical question>
I want one with a sword, or possibly a shotgun, built in. Or both.
One of those things could easily be used a a self-defense weapon.
That being the case, Mayor DeBallsackio is probably preparing an executive order outlawing them in NYC even as i type this.
An old person with a cane and knowledge of how to use it as a weapon can pass through any security checkpoint.

All you have to do to see this is action is log onto Facebook.
“...Phased Plasma rifle in the forty watt range...”
“Hey, just what you see pal...!”

If you’re not in the phonebook, those robots have a harder time finding you when the records are lost in the future war between man and machine.
I know each generation thinks the upcoming one is the end of America, but just the word “selfie” makes me cringe.
I allways carry a 9 iron and a golf ball when i take walks in my hood
Recalls a scene in Lord Of The Rings:
Háma: “I cannot allow you before Théoden king so armed, Gandalf Grayhame. By order of
Gríma Wormtongue.”
[With a nod from Ganfalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli give their many weapons to the guards.]
Háma: “Your staff.”
Gandalf: “Eh? Oh. No, you would not part an old man from his walking stick?”
[Háma thinks a moment, gives Gandalf a knowing look, then allows him to pass.]
[Gandalf winks and takes Legolas’ hand as they enter the hall.]
...
later
...
Gandalf: “Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind you teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm!”
[Gandalf raises his staff.]
Gríma: “His staff! I told you to take the wizard’s staff!”
And we've lost our leadership there too: "The selfie-stick phenomenon, which got its start in Asia"
And probably posted all 500 on facebook - Hey look at me, look at me. I think RUSh said it all started with the death of Diana, with thousands wanting to be part of the story by hanging out at all the memorials.
A Selfie should be called a Lonely.
Selfie sounds real nasty too
When my dad passed away I wanted to do a photo montage for the funeral. I was able to get about 30 pictures spanning his entir 80 year life. There were more but most were him holding my daughter over the past few years and didn't want to make it all about that short portion of his life.
His generation could not even fathom 500 pictures in one day. Hell, my mom and his wedding album is like 10 pictures! How the world has changed.
An old person with a cane and no knowledge of how to use it as a weapon can also pass through any security checkpoint.
Post-mortem photography (also known as memorial portraiture or a mourning portrait) is the practice of photographing the recently deceased. These photographs of deceased loved ones were a normal part of American and European culture in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Commissioned by grieving families, postmortem photographs not only helped in the grieving process, but often represented the only visual remembrance of the deceased and were among a family’s most precious possessions

Why does anyone ever want to take a picture of themselves?
From the article: "As Alarcon hams it up, passersby stare, but shes too busy looking at herself in the photos to notice."
Situational Awareness comes to mind - as does a Godsend for the Peeping Toms and other pervs.
