it just never occured to me that the technology (and electrical capacity) was already available up there.

I didn't know about it either. But, it is pretty recent: this story was published last month: The ISS gets its Zero-G 3D printer

This is apparently the company that built it: Made In Space. Their website says it was launched into orbit on 2014-09-21.
