The trouble with having old guys in the military goes to the saying: “Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, hell just kill you.” - John Steinbeck
Realistically speaking, old guys do not futz around. They see no great value in capturing enemy soldiers, and often have a “nits make lice” attitude.
They also tend to be very pragmatic about combat. That is, if they set up an ambush, they will be very intent on their being no survivors who might make a fuss. They also have great respect for letting artillery do the heavy lifting.
That is, why walk a mile to get into a shooting contest when the artillery will do the job better, faster, and safer? And with no walking.
