Word For The Day, Monday, 12/22/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
portend; verb
verb (used with object) 1. to indicate in advance; to foreshadow or presage, as an omen does: "The street incident may portend a general uprising."2 to signify; mean.
Etymology: 1400-50; late Middle English < Latin portendere to point out, indicate, portend, variant of prōtendere to extend. Synonyms:foretell, forecast, augur, promise, forebode.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
What does the cold-blooded murder of 2 NYC cops portend for the personal protection of Mayor DeBlasio, whose hands are dripping with their blood? Will the police union sit for him to feign outrage over their deaths when his rhetoric fanned the flames that caused it?
No pushing at the door please!
Merry Christmas week.
What chaos doth this Christmas week portend? Seems there are all varieties of threats on our holiest week. May God bless every Freeper and their family.
It’s the opposite side from the starboard end.
God Bless you and your family as well and yes, we are under attack by the Evil One. On every side. A+++
you need a boot in YOUR end ; ) A+++
Most obvious definition in the world: running out of fortified wine at Christmastime.
Ah the time of the year when we got to portend to like a whole bunch of people we really don’t.
Pass the Christmas whiskey.
Your Stillers look like the real deal. Pittsburgh/Seattle Superbowl perhaps?
Following the lead of the demoncrats on the budget and amnesty portends the lose of the Senate for the Republicans in 2016.
HORRORS! ; ) A+++
I wouldn’t go that far. I think the Patriots have the upper hand. Now, if someone else beats the Patriots for us...
But, let’s see how Sunday plays out with the Bengals. Winner takes the division. Funny how the Bengals half-game makes tonight’s game irrelevant. If the Bengals win tonight, they are a half game up. If they lose, they are a half game down.
Either way, winner next week rules.
And I sure hope it’s not Seattle again. After all that whining last time, if they played Pittsburgh in the SB again, they would be pre-emptively whining.
and you have double the relatives to pretend to like ; ) Happy first Married Christmas : ) A+++
hope that someone gets them on the right track come January. A+++
How about the hapless Redskins snatching the rug out from under the Eagles? xsboy and 2 friends went to that game and it was a good one. xsteen is up at her inlaws and reported some sourpusses up there because of it : )
Yes, and the Browns can play spoiler, too, by knocking the Ravens out this week.
I would love for anyone to knock out the Ravens. Can’t stand that team even if I love their OC.
Rabid Giant fans all exhort end
Odell Beckham, for what he might portend
His play’s been outstanding
Catching balls by one-handing
It’s becoming the latest sport trend
