“Yo, girl, when you start throwing all the rules out the window, that means the rules on stealing go with them. Welcome to the world you helped make.”

I don’t recall that she ever encouraged theft in her songs or writings. Bad behavior in general, another story...

Publicity. That’s all. Her recordings turned into nothing but recordings of her masturbating.

We are being tortured a lot these past few years. Didn’t see that in the Frankenstein report. I’d take waterboarding over listening to another liberal bald face lie shown ad nauseum on every media outlet every second of every day.

And there is the Grisman/Garcia/Tony Rice Pizza Tapes.

Stolen and released by the pizza delivery guy.

Finally released by Grisman on his own record label.

Perhaps but that’s not the point she herself is making.

She is speaking strictly of her emotional, hyperbolic reaction.

As was the case with the Sony breach, they are seeking to affix blame everywhere but with the fault of those whose lax security measures allowed such breaches. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure where intellectual property is concerned. If Madonna is a cold eyed businesswoman per her reputation then she has missed a trick here.

Hey, doesn't Madonna (like all her celeb pals) believe in sharing the ones wealth and giving things away?

What's that Madonna, not your wealth, just mine?

Maybe someone should revoke her dramatic license.

Sheet music and books were bootlegged in America before this nation respected other nations’ terms of copyright.

And bootleggers pressed counterfeit copies of records in the 50s and 60s (often with physical repercussions from the mobsters who owned the publishing on those songs).

Grey-market tape traders circulated concerts and old movies/television/oddities on audio and videotape well into the 1990s (and it was a process that led to audio/video degradation). Now some of those same recordings appear on youtube regularly (sometimes in better condition, sometimes worse, than they were circulated decades ago).

I don’t recall Mick Jones being publicly upset about the tape of his original mix of the Clash’s Combat Rock being widely bootlegged (on CDs, LPs, and digital downloads).

Since the source is claimed to be from his tape, one wonders if he leaked it or someone connected within his entourage.

As to who should pay for investigation/prosecution, corporate espionage occurs all the time and I don’t recall the government intervening.

The same media that will joyously leak national security information, details from leaked presidential debate recordings, etc, will always embargo news accounts of privileged information like the ending to the final Harry Potter book.

Even U2 had to give it away in this day and age.

When Prince signed to Sony after years of independence/self-released, he required the label to give away the new album at his concerts. It did result in his first radio hit in years.

I don’t know what business model works today (I went to a corporate sponsored “free concert” last week), things can create “buzz” but they don’t feel genuinely exciting. And that true excitement is what will convince a happy audience to part with their money.

I’m reading about the chitlin’ circuit of the 1930s-1960s right now. Clarence Gatemouth Brown claims that he made $600 (thrown at the stage) in 15 minutes of vamping while T-Bone Walker was sick backstage (this in 1947).

“believe in sharing the ones wealth and giving things away?”

Not exactly. She believes in YOU giving your wealth and things away.
