Penn State rallies past Boston College for Pinstripe Bowl overtime win
Pittsburgh Post Gazette ^ | 12-27-14 | Audrey Snyder

NEW YORK – Penn State waited two years to play in a bowl game, working through unprecedented NCAA sanctions stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, and the team’s finale didn’t lack dramatics.

The Nittany Lions went back and forth with Boston College this evening at Yankee Stadium in the Pinstripe Bowl, trading big hits and explosive runs until the game required extra possessions.

Penn State’s senior class, one that experienced five different head coaches during their collegiate careers, NCAA sanctions and a bowl ban that was lifted early in September, capped their careers with the class’ first bowl victory, beating Boston College 31-30 in overtime.

Quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit tight end Kyle Carter in overtime, and a successful extra point from Sam Ficken – not a given considering the Eagles (7-6) shanked their extra point attempt after scoring first — sent the Lions (7-6) into celebration.

The Lions trailed 21-7 in the second half and after a first half where both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, Hackenberg showed signs of the freshman sensation who led the Lions last season.

Staying upright in the pocket and working the ball downfield, the quarterback who threw a career-high 15 interceptions in the regular season and hadn’t eclipsed 300 yards passing since the team’s Sept. 13 win against Rutgers showed off that big arm again.

In the first quarter Hackenberg lofted a ball down the Penn State sideline to true freshman Chris Godwin, who hauled in the deep pass and took off for a 72-yard touchdown to put the Lions on the board first. The touchdown was the second of Godwin’s career, and he finished the game with a career-high seven catches for 140 yards.

Well the refs accounted for 10 points in a double overtime game. I’d say they were a factor.

...by the way, I’m still waiting for you to tell me how an interception at the 40 yd line automatically counts as 7 points against PSU...seems to me, plenty of teams in the history of football have stopped an opponent forty yards away from pay dirt...

...but then of course my well documented senility may have much to do with that...

...well, Fred, if we’re talking football, yeah...

Talk about being an amusing know-nothing..

...back on familiar terms, I see...good...but anyway, since I’m knowledge challenged, I looked it up...since 1993, when the teams stated playing every year, it’s OSU 15 wins against PSU’s 7, with an average score of 26-18...and we won’t figure in the vacated games, as that would really get you mad...

...in summation, perhaps you could enlighten an old dunce like myself, and tell me in what regard the above doesn’t indicate OSU football superiority...and be specific...

Pretty sure there’s a stat in the NFL dedicated to “points off turnovers”...I guess they keep track of that just for something to do.

In this case, the turnover shouldn’t have been a turnover. Please tell me the last time (or only time) you’ve ever heard “They didn’t have the correct feed in the video booth” excuse before. Because I’ve seen it all (heel-toe rule against UM), and that one was over the top.

JVP had to literally run down officials for explanations to some of the officiating atrocities committed against PSU while in the b1g. Thankfully, this led to replay - which the b1g sort of pioneered. Funny, JVP also always railed against there not being a playoff in college football (see last night’s 30 for 30).

JVP was obviously ahead of his time.

Notice that PSU’s record before the B1G against THE-0 was 6-2.

If the purpose of your football program is turn out student athletes with no degree, and no chance of ever getting one, then, yes, THE-0 has a better program in recent years -- BY FAR.

The b1g is still confiscating PSU’s bowl share from the conference pool. The ncaa lets them go to a bowl (purportedly based on Maytag Repairman Mitchell’s report), and the b1g still keeps all their revenue.

Between the ncaa and the b1g’s bullying, there are maybe a dozen schools who could absorb such penalties and remain strong. PSU is lucky they are one of them.

Can't switch at this point. TV has PSU in the b1g into the 2020's. Buyout would be immense. ACC is where they belong though. That's where their alumni base is.

...well, now, how did I know you were going to take the debate in that direction...

...in the disscussion of football programs, when ‘the blockheads we both bitterly recruited are smarter at my school than they are at yours’ argument is unveiled, the matter of quality has been ceded...

...well, Fred, that’s why I said we wouldn’t include them in the analysis, because it would make you frothing mad...I see you lived up to that low expectation...

Moron.

...I take it that you didn’t make the debate team at your school, Fred...such incivility...

...and while we’re at it, Fred, let’s not forget OSU had a game vacated as well...a victory, by the by, and a large one...perhaps we should both BWAHAHA and say OSU didn’t win that one as well...

I'm not taking the debate in any direction: I was always there.

As for the rest of your comment, it's nonsense. And typical of the nonsense raised by THE-0, the SEC, and other "schools" which have no interest in education. Once you retreat to your position, what you're saying is "you are able to graduate 30% more of the blockheads we both bitterly recruited. What does that say the academic quality of your school versus mine?"

Duh. Everything, genius.

Yes, I was the captain of my high school debate team, and we were in the state finals both my junior and senior years. And yes, derision is a legitimate form of debate when you're dealing with morons.

...except who was talking about education in the first place, Fred...? I only made the unassailable point that OSU has a better football team than PSU...you dragged education into it...

Once you retreat to your position, what you’re saying is “you are able to graduate 30% more of the blockheads we both bitterly recruited. What does that say the academic quality of your school versus mine?”

...well now, Fred, you’re not being on the up and up...you’re having me say things which I did not in fact say...it’s immaterial to my argument whether a school graduates more of these sought after blockheads, and therefore I said nothing of what you have ‘quoted’ me as saying...my original point, on which you challenged me with an ad hominem, again is that OSU football is better than PSU football, and will be for a while...2 games to one better for the past twenty two years...

Duh. Everything, genius.

..since I didn’t say what you said I said, Fred, your response here is to your own point...

Yes, I was the captain of my high school debate team, and we were in the state finals both my junior and senior years.

...well good for you, Fred...I retract my acerbic comment regarding the school debate team...

And yes, derision is a legitimate form of debate when you’re dealing with morons.

...sigh...ad hominems again...and we were making such progress...as I suspected, we cannot have a dialogue on Penn St. issues unless they are structured to your points of view, lest you resort to the low ground...look, if you are a grad, I understand your heartfelt loyalty to PSU, and I admire it, and in a way envy it, as I had no campus experience per se, and have no such innate loyalties directing my opinions...and so, with well wishing I bid you adieu...

,,,but don’t be surprised if you see Urban Meyer hoisting the national title flag shortly...

‘the blockheads we both bitterly recruited are smarter at my school than they are at yours’

Please do at least make a minimal effort to keep up with your own posts, even if you can't keep up with mine.

I offer the above, along with the fact that you apparently believe that ellipses are some sort of punctuation marks, as yet more notes added in proof of your dubious "capacity." See, it isn't an ad hominem when it's demonstrably true.

...ah, Fred, Fred, good try, really capital in fact...a rhetorical question, I know, but why didn’t you post the comment in it’s entirety...?

along with the fact that you apparently believe that ellipses are some sort of punctuation marks

...ellipses, Fred...really...? Ellipses prove my utter stupidity? I’m sure many things attest to my ‘dubious capacity’, but use of ellipses on an informal internet board isn’t one of them...now if we were handing in a mid term composition,or preparing a written presentation, you might have a point, but of course we are not, so of course you don’t...truly, Fred, your low grade insults are quite disappointing, really unworthy, given your starring role on the school debate team and all...

...all levity aside, Fred, it’s been a lot of fun jawing with you, though it would appear you haven’t enjoyed it as I have...so I wish you all the best for the new year, in an elliptical manner of speaking, of course...
