“Screw you, I street raced every night from 1952 until 1958”.

Racing like we did on a vacant country road is just a little different than blocking off a dam highway.

We always had street races on San Fernando road near the end of Balboa in the 70’s and into the 80’s, but the road is pretty jacked up now. We always went to deserted areas where the only people that would get hurt were the ones actually racing their cars. What the hell has happened to people nowadays? Hell on My Street, Angeles Forest highway, you could easily have 1/2 mile races, there is a 1 1/2 mile straightaway going uphill to the boundary of Angeles National Forest. There is a group of about 10 porsche’s that race through the canyon on Saturday Mornings.

Mine, Oak Cliff and Dallas, we were NEVER brazen enough to block off busy streets to race.

Maybe there’s more to the story you’re telling than is being said.

I can’t believe that unregulated street racing is “safer” than not. Why? No safety requirements, no equipment requirements, unregulated “track”, etc.

And the fact that there are fatalities in street racing is counter intuitive to the statement by the police that it was somehow “safer” to allow it.

It would be interesting to see the fatality statistics of course racing vs. street racing...I can’t think of a time in the last 11 years where our local race track had any fatalities...

It was 'safer' for a few reasons:

1. Ohio Street was near the Buffalo River. The only reason for driving there was to go to the flour mills.
2. No thru traffic - no reason whatever to go there except to go to work.
3. No pedestrians
4. Streets practically deserted on weekends, except for the racers
5. No residential property nearby.
