Rural American Sheriffs always seem to be the guys who ‘get it’ the most. God Bless them all!

Another example of the breed: John Hulett of Lowndes County, AL. John, a black man, was active in the civil rights movement and Lowndes County -- located between Montgomery and Selma -- was one of its epicenters.

In 1970, he ran for Sheriff and was the first black elected to office in the county. He quickly earned the respect of every resident of the county -- black and white. He effectively enforced the law and played no racial favorites. He was a fair and honest man. And, unlike so many of his contemporaries, incorruptible.

John passed in 2006...and the country lost a good man.

Alex Underwood reminds me of John Hulett.
