Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract as coach of the Buffalo Bills and is now a free agent to pursue other jobs.

Marrone exercised the unique option during the final hours of a three-day window that opened Monday, stipulated in the four-year contract he signed with the Bills in 2013. The opt-out clause was included in the original contract in the event of an ownership change, which occurred when Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the franchise in October.

"We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization," Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. "We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.

Last straw was when they had to play a “home” game in Detroit due to 6 feet of snow in Buffalo.

As a former Bills fan, I’m not sure what to think of this...could be good news for Buffalo but it depends if they can get someone else who is better.

Yep...this little gem was at the bottom of the article....

Orton announced his retirement this week. The team also traded its 2015 first-round pick to draft wide receiver Sammy Watkins with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft.

They're gonna suck for a few years to say the least

I’m surprised because being an NFL head coach is the high point all the various assistant coaches, offensive coordinators, etc. Would eventually aspire to. I don’t know the details of the Bills coach and team situation. But seems odd that a coach would walk away from being an NFL head coach.

Word on the street is that he might take the Jets job.

I take it he wouldn’t have opted out unless he knew he had another job lined up.

if that can be proven then its tampering and the team that tampered would be in big trouble...

It’s possible to get permission to talk to an employed coach.

if the Jets asked then received permission to talk with Marrone it would’ve been plastered all over the place....plus its a lateral move and the Bills would want draft picks in return...

It appears he will get a bunch of offers (likely in a better geographic locale and higher salary - and just getting out of NYS for the same salary probably gives him a big raise via lower taxes).

He also has a special contract clause that pays him his full 2015 salary from Buff even if he is working at another HC job in the NFL - that’s more lucrative than the typical NFL contract deal.

wouldn’t be a bad move if you can deal with his baggage and not mind his occasional implosions...

"Marrone's clause also allows him to walk away with his 2015 guaranteed base salary of $4 million without it counting as an offset against any future salary even if he should land another job, sources said. Marrone now is free to negotiate with any team seeking a head coach."

shows you what a garbage franchise the Bills are...who offers a first year head coach a contract with that clause?? if its Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson on their second Giants/Cowboys contract its understandable. But a former offensive line coach coming from a mediocre Syracuse program???

Buffalo’s management is dumber than the University of Tennessee’s then.

Marrone proves that he’s not a maroon. Getting his butt out of Buffalo is the same decision of countless people I meet in Florida. Seems half the people in Florida are from Buffalo, the other half from Detroit/Flint.

There is HUGE money in football from the tv contracts because live sports are one of the very few times that people actually watch commercials (as opposed to DVR shows).

So you have a situation with a lot of money chasing a relatively small number of coaching prospects.
