I respectfully disagree, There are cats waiting at the shelter that need homes.
Of course I am all for getting a shelter pet. All of my cats were either from the shelter or heading for it. However, the cat owner does not have an obligation to get a cat immediately. However, I might suggest at the right time that if your household and life style support it, get two kittens. More than twice the fun.

I have always found that when getting kittens or pups, it has been better to get one pet, have it bond with the family then get the other when the first is about a year old. Then the second bonds with the humans too. Otherwise I have found them to be too other focused.

One time I went to the shelter looking for a cat that we were missing, and came home with a guinea pig.
I also told my wife about a nice sweet Lynx point female that some bastard had de-clawed and she went and adopted it the next day.
