It seems to me that welfare should be granted only to UK citizens, with none for immigrants. Immigrants should either be sponsored by someone who can provide for their needs, have a job waiting for them, or have their own resources. That was the requirement in the US until the 60s.

That is still the requirement for most immigrants (refugees are excepted), it is just not consistently enforced. After five years, immigrants can get citizenship, and are then eligible for benefits for the rest of their lives.
I forget which poster recommended it, but one freeper put it nicely, about how to counter this subversive effort by Islamists:
