The RCC teaching on celibacy is one I can never understand...
It goes against all the natural inclination of the human race, which was created in the image of God...
Sex is normal in a coveted relationship...
Oh' please spare me the RCC theological reasoning...
I already know it and think it's legalism at best, possible evil at worst...

Rewriting history in the service of bashing the Church is always in season.
Has everyone forgotten the "mass grave" at the abbey that the Brits touted last year? The one that was found to be a hoax?

Bidding for the movie rights is now open. Expect it to be on the short list for the Oscars in 2017.

However, the Catholic Church took positive action after Katharine’s escape and testimony: the convent was DISOLVED!
“But along with other others at the convent, Maria Luisa did get her comeuppance.
“The investigation found she had tried to kill another nun by giving her enough opium to kill a horse. She was also thought to be responsible for the deaths of three other sisters.
“For crimes including the poisoning and murder, she was sentenced to monastic imprisonment in absolute isolation for 18 years. The convent was also dissolved.”

Generally women by nature are much more socially connected and yearn for children but some can thrive as nuns. Seems that women could subjugate their sexual desires much more than men could. St Paul wrote its better to marry than to burn in unfullfilled sexual desires out of control. Depends on the individual..

Sounds like the plot of a cheap 70s porn film. Or a scene from a 70s Monty Python flick.

What was found to be a hoax? Tuam? There’s still an inquiry ongoing. No one disputes that there’s a mass grave there so no hoax to be found, it’s been known for 40 years. It’s the number of children claimed to have been buried there as a result of examining death records that set off a controversy.

There may be more truth to that than most people know. Going back to the beginning of the Reformation period (maybe even earlier) one of the most popular themes in pornographic novels was French convents. From what I understand (I haven't read the material for obvious reasons), well-endowed fishermen being shipwrecked and taken in was a particularly popular "thematic element."
Haywood's Fantomina makes a subtle reference to the idea of convents being hotbeds of perversion at the end of the novel when the protagonist is sent away to a continental nunnery. I've sometimes wondered if Shakespeare's "Get thee to a nunnery" is also a reference, but I've read that "nunnery" was also slang for a common brothel, so who knows.
