the footballs were not deflated..... they were under inflated.
the problem will be traced to the gage that gave incorrect readings that were under pressure. The gage was not calibrated or was beyond the calibration date. Anyway, the underinflation of all points to an improperly calibrated gage

if the Patriots wanted to be butts, and supply the ref balls at check-time with 5 lbs of pressure in them, that wouldn’t be cheating. it’d be obnoxious, but not cheating.
The only cheating would be if after the balls were returned to the ball boy, just prior to the game start, that the balls were then deflated, by the team. Unless that can be proven, this is on the Refs...and still not a big deal.

I have a tire/rim problem on my car which creates a very slow leak. I know when I inflate that tire in my cold garage then drive it outside where the sun is shining, the air pressure is different.

What if the bone-dry footballs were at ambient temp in a hot room when they were pumped up to 12.5 psi, and they were then taken out to play in wet 40* weather? I wonder how much the psi would go down when the “hot” 80* air inside cooled down to 40*, especially when going from dry to wet, resulting in more pliable leather?
The wet leather would make the balls feel softer. Wet leather also stretches, allowing the volume of the envelope for air within to be larger, hence the psi drops even lower.
Just some ideas.

Currently, the NFL requires the referees directly have ownership of the footballs used in kicking field goals, punts and kickoffs; it may now extend that to footballs used in actual game play. In short, no more "seasoning" of the football by individual teams before the game--it will now be done by the designated NFL officials.
The saints coach was barred fir a year so why is the scum of a coach who has a history of cheatin still in the NFL.
If Brady did not need the huge advantage why are all the game bowl deflated to act like Nerf balls.

Lol. The only way that could happen in the middle of winter, is if cheating Belichick or one of his cheating staff deliberately heated the room to 90F so that they would deflate outdoors.
I corrected my math. They were 19% under on the average. I would expect professionals to notice the difference, easily. The Colts player that intercepted the ball in fact did.
I’m wondering where the gauge(s) came from when they did the original spec check. When the Colts brought it to the ref’s attention, the ref’s used a different guage and found 11 of the 12 balls provided by the Patriots were illegal.

There can also be a difference between the readings obtained from two different gages (gage tolerance).
These anomalies are one reason the NFL provides a range of acceptable pressures for the footballs.
I this case, based on the % disparity of the claimed readings, and assuming NFL teams do not typically use cheap plastic junk pressure gages, the under-inflation claimed would almost have to be either intentional, or the result of a defective pressure gage being used to take initial measurements.
Not saying they’re not a good team, but what is this, the 3rd time they’ve been caught cheating? He should have been kicked out after the 1st.
If they were that way through the whole game I would say it didn’t matter. Softer ball, easier to hold.
