Immigration Naturalization Test

I was curious if any freepers have any experience with the immigration naturalization process. I have volunteered to teach through our church the civics / government / history etc class leading up to the students taking the the Naturalization Test.

Lots of government documents etc here, but no real "curriculum" for the class. This is a first for our church. So I'm basically developing that, while using a variety of government documents. Does anyone have any experience with this?

This is for immigrants who are doing it "the right way".

Just looking for ideas. (nice ideas) :)

Go to an INS office and get their little booklet.

I have several booklets.... but no real class curriculum. Looks like they have a two part test. The civics part (which I’m to teach them) and the English test (oral, reading, and writing tests) which they already need to know.

Took this test once just for $h*+s and giggles. Scored 100%. There were maybe 10% of the questions which required that I actually had to think just a little bit about to answer, and that’s being generous. It was probably less than 5%.

Hi there! I've taught this class for years, both the old test and the new one.

Here is a book you will find useful, and you can adapt it to suit the level of your students. Citizenship Now! - Karen Hilgeman, Kristin Sherman, et al. It's available on Amazon. It also has a DVD, with simulated interviews, which your students will find very interesting to watch. It also has a lot of English practice, exercises.

There is a lot on the internet too. Also, go to www.uscis.gov to find out more about the process. They also have practice questions.

Have students make flashcards together of all the 100 questions.

I'll send you some more information later in a personal mail.

I found preparing students for this important test very rewarding and I ended up taking the test and getting my citizenship while I was teaching them! Good luck!

Yeah... its government, integrated civics, and American History. (what we learned years ago in 8th grade). I’m guessing they don’t even teach it in public schools anymore....

My wife took it last year - 100 questions in the pool, 10 are asked.

An 80 year old Venezuelan lady I know took the test, in English, and she was doing very well until they got to the question: “Who is the Commander in Chief?”

She rolled her eyes and said, “I can’t remember his name...but he’s a real jerk.”

She passed the test and was sworn in!

Considering that she escaped Hugo only to end up with Obozo, I feel her pain!

LOL!

A few years ago I had a Japanese co-worker who was studying for the citizenship test. She showed me the questions. Most native born Americans could not pass it. Can you name the original 13 states? Can you name all of your elected representatives?

What could be more American than openly criticizing the top of the government to another government official, while in a government office?

Yep!

She obviously “Gets” what the Bill of Rights is all about.

And, as the left was fond of saying during the Bush years (but seem to not be saying it anymore) “Dissent is patriotic.”
