Bill Belichick says he has ‘no explanation’ for Deflategate

Coach Bill Belichick said he did not know of any issue with the Patriots’ game balls in Sunday’s AFC Championship, and did not learn the league was investigating his team until Monday morning.

He also said he did not know how the Patriots’ footballs became underinflated during the game.

“I have no explanation for what happened,” he said.

It was Belichick’s first appearance since news emerged that 11 of 12 footballs the Patriots used against the Colts in the AFC Championship were underinflated. He gave a lengthy opening statement, but responded to questions only by saying he had no more to say about it.

“When I came in Monday morning, I was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs. I had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation until Monday morning. I’d say I’ve learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than I knew or had talked about it in the last 40 years,” Belichick said.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick spoke to the media Thursday morning on issues surrounding underinflated balls used during the AFC Championship game.

Belichick said he does not concern himself much with the condition of game balls, although he acknowledged players would have a greater interest in it.

“I think we all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists, have certain preferences on footballs, they know a lot more about it than I do, they’re a lot more sensitive than I am, and I hear them comment on it from time to time, so I can tell you, and they will tell you, that there is never any sympathy whatsoever from me on that subject,” Belichick said.

Belichick said he did not know quarterback Tom Brady’s preferences for game balls.

“Tom’s personal preferences on his footballs are something that he can talk about in much better detail and information than I could possibly provide,” Belichick said. “I can tell you in my coaching career I have never talked to any player, staff member, about football air pressure. That is now a subject that I have ever brought up. To me, the footballs are approved by the league and game officials pregame, and we play with what’s out there. And that’s the only way I have ever thought about that.”

Belichick said prior to this issue emerging, he was unaware of the exact process by which game balls were prepared and handled.

“Let me just say that my personal coaching philosophy and my mentality has always been to make things as difficult as possible for players in practice, and so with regard to footballs, I’m sure that any current or past player of mine will tell you that the balls we practice with are as bad as they can be. Wet, sticky, cold, slippery, however bad we can make them, I make them,” Belichick said. “Any time the players complain about the quality of the footballs, I make them worse.”

The Patriots face the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1.

Quarterback Tom Brady is scheduled to meet with the media on Thursday at approximately 4 p.m.

One answer..45 to 7

And, won 35-31 the week before and the Baltimore Raven players were the ones that tipped the Colts off the balls might be deflated.

If the balls were deflated in the Baltimore game, that might have been the deciding factor in the outcome of the game.

Making excuse for the Patriots is like making excuses for Obama's corruption.

Obviously, the Pats handicapped themselves in the 1st half so as to give the nation a good football game. When those nasty refs made them play with properly inflated balls in the 2nd half, the NFL lost a ton of money when people turned off the 2nd half onslaught.

Nice try but the Baltimore Ravens believed the same thing was done in their game against New England the week before and the Patriots barely won that game.

I’m only disputing whether an under-inflated ball is an advantage.

Tom Brady has openly said he likes his footballs under-inflated. So, he thinks it is an advantage.

Of course, an under-inflated football in the rain is easier to grip, throw and catch.

since the balls could have deflated naturally according to the Laws of Physics..........

Experts have already determined there is no way the weather could have caused the balls to be as under-inflated as they were.

Rush made a great point today - the outrage by the media is so over-the-top for something so trivial - Obama shreds our Constitution and lies to our faces and there is nary a a squeek.

Of course, football isn't as important as those governing the nation.

But, Obama and Belicheat are cut from the same cloth. They break rules or laws to get what they want. Neither should be defended.

AND---none of the other team's footballs were deflated. Only the Chetriots footballs.

Rush mentioned the Baltimore Ravens. Rush said the Ravens had a concern in November about the footballs.

If true, this would have been long before the playoffs.
One would think the Ravens would have examined the footballs with a fine tooth comb before the recent championship game.

I’ll be glad when NASCAR starts their season. Never any controversy there. (I don’t need a “sarc” tag, do I?)

Too funny, did you hear a whoosh zip over your head or is the hate so strong that you can't see that as the kidding that it was? My gawd, this whole thing has jumped the shark

Before Rush signed off, he said the Tom Brady news conference has been moved up to 3:40 PM or 3:45 PM Eastern, roughly 35 or 40 minutes from now.

If the refs were honest and honorable, the Lions would be playing the pats, anyway.

Brady pushed for rule to let visiting team provide own footballs
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 22, 2015, 11:37 AM EST
Tom Brady AP

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has long wanted control over the footballs he throws, to the point where he was the driving force behind a rules change that allowed visiting teams to provide their own footballs, rather than having both teams use footballs provided by the home team.

In 2006, Brady and Peyton Manning successfully lobbied the league to let every team provide its own footballs to use on offense. Prior to that, it was always the home team that supplied the footballs, which meant that road team quarterbacks didn’t get to try the footballs out until pregame warmups.

Brady said at the time that he appreciated the opportunity to address the league’s Competition Committee and get a rule change that he felt would be advantageous to himself and other quarterbacks.

“The thing is, every quarterback likes it a little bit different,” Brady told the Sun-Sentinel at the time. “Some like them blown up a little bit more, some like them a little more thin, some like them a little more new, some like them really broken in.”

Brady’s comments come into new focus this week as the NFL investigates whether the Patriots deflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game, in violation of NFL rules. After Patriots coach Bill Belichick said today that he knows nothing about how balls are prepared prior to games, increased attention has turned to whether Brady was behind deflating the footballs.

Of course, an under-inflated football in the rain is easier to grip, throw and catch.

This is EXACTLY what I am disputing. The EVIDENCE of the 2nd half with properly inflated balls show that it is NOT.

OR....

The final score could have been 65-7 if the balls remained deflated?
