I don't understand why every economic "forecaster" says Japan is in decline because it won't import foreign labor. Its just stupid, and no one thinks when they repeat it. Japan is a very homogenous culture, and importing Africans or Pakistanis would simply create an immediate outsider, underclass in their society. Look at Europe - their "foreign labor" winds up on welfare at twice the rate of native Germans or French. How is that an economic benefit?
There’s the mistaken notion that a larger proportion of the population needs to be of working age, to support the older generation.
However:
1. Japan doesn’t need a large number of resident workers to run its factories. It is a head-office economy, and can put up factories in whatever foreign countries gives them the best deals. These foreign countries (e.g. the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, etc.) are more than happy to accept those factories — in fact they even provide subsides to attract them.
2. Japan is heavily invested in robotics. They have industrial robots to make cars. They will soon have domestic robots, to care for the elderly.
3. Their ethnic homogeneity means that they are more willing to sacrifice for the common good. (Plus everything you said on the subject.)
Exactly. In 20-30 years when europeans (and possibly us) are either dhimmified or having a civil war, the japanese, koreans and Chinese will be the new world powers.
I think they understand that excellence, not diversity, is strength.
But they miss out on all that strength that comes from diversity...
