The rules violation in Spygate was simply this: they videotaped the Jets coaches from the field. If they had videotaped them from a stadium booth it would have been fine. Here’s the NFL rule: “No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game...All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead.”
Last week Raven coach John Harbaugh charged the Pats with running illegal formations. Turns out they were perfectly legal, according to the NFL office.
