Couple says mother gave them her newborn baby in Lakewood, saying she didn't want it anymore

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Lakewood police are investigating whether a newborn baby was abandoned by her mother near a Walmart parking lot on Tuesday morning or if the child was legally dropped off under Colorado's Safe Haven Law.

Firefighters told 7NEWS that a middle-aged couple left a baby girl with them at West Metro Fire Station No. 1 around 8:15 a.m.

The couple told firefighters they were at a nearby store when they were approached by a woman who said she didn't want the child and gave it to them. Police confirm that store was the Walmart on West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.

"This is the first time for any of us at this station to receive a newborn child," said firefighter and paramedic Cody Beinlich.

He said the couple wanted to stay anonymous and didn't give their names. Beinlich said it was obvious the baby had recently been born.

"The child didn’t look like it had been completely cleaned off," said Beinlich. "Still had some amniotic fluid dried on. It just had the appearance of a baby that had just been born very recently."

He said he and other firefighters checked out the baby and transported her to the hospital. She appeared healthy and well-cared for, fire officials said.

Colorado has what's called a "safe haven" law.

I agree. The baby is safe and that is the utmost importance. Better than what some babies have suffered through when unwanted by their bio-mom.

It is a wise law. Thank God this child didn’t get burned in the middle of the street.

I once heard of people who had baskets on their front porch for unwanted babies. I think this was in the 1980’s? Not sure. If a mother did not want her baby she could leave it in the basket, and I suppose it was understood the people in that house would legally adopt it. Not sure what state this was in.

I remember a lot of Looney Tune/Merrie Melody Cartoons always had the “Baby on the door step” theme them in some of their shows, so this must have been a practice back in the 1920’s to 1960’s?

Shame we could not do this again as a society.

They shouldn’t even look for the mother, imo.

This one had a semi happy ending. I feel bad for these kids because when the authorities came to investigate the two kids were clean, dressed well, well feed and taken care of better then they had ever been before. I wonder what happened to these kids.

A woman near me took in unwanted babies. We live in a poor neighborhood with plenty of pregnant teenagers. Babies were being left in trash cans, dumpsters, you name it.

This state does now have a safe haven law so I haven’t seen the baskets on her porch lately. However, I’ve been told she has spoken at our local schools to young girls about the law and she has made herself available to informally counsel confused, frightened, pregnant teens.

Most Importantly; The mother let the child live, and gave her to compassionate responsible adults.
Less Importantly ;The couple identified as “elderly”, were in their 40’s and 50’s.

Exodus Chapter 2

1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.

2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.

5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.

6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.

7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?

8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.

9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child, and nursed it.

10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

It’s a shame the “safe haven” law could not extend to this woman’s front porch. God bless her!

“;The couple identified as “elderly”, were in their 40’s and 50’s.”

To a young, teen, which I bet this girl was, a person in their 40’s 50’s is “elderly"On that note, I remember when they were building the Pyramids at Giza! She was seeking an "older" person because she wanted someone responsible and had it together. She was desperate, yet on some level she was thinking, you have to give her that.

Funny, as I was browsing this thread, I am watching the “Popeye” movie, where they find a “baby in a basket”, complete with a note from the anonymous mother pinned to its chest.

Looks like the Mother did something right—now the baby needs a good home and loving parents—Not the Baby Farming Homes that exist now. Adoption should be made easy for Americans!

The article said the mother gave the baby to two people in a Walmart parking lot and said she didn’t want it anymore. What if those people were perverts and kept the baby instead of taking the baby to the fire station?

I pray the prosecutor doesn’t file charges either. Why? It would set a very bad precedent IMO. The young girl (and bless her for it) didn’t abandon the baby in a trash can or bury it alive. She made sure the child was taken in and safe. Her intent was to get the baby somewhere safe and sound (and since the child was still unclean from birth.. she herself was post delivery). I’ve delivered twice and to think this young girl did it probably by herself amazes me. Bless her for doing the right thing in choosing LIFE for her child and bless the couple who took care of the baby.

IIRC, the reason she abandoned baby Moses was because pharaoh had ordered all male Hebrew slave children killed, to lessen the likelihood of future rebellion as the slaves were breeding prolifically.

I was meaning to point out that the practice of placing babies in baskets and left on doorsteps most likely has its origin in the story of baby Moses... once upon a time people knew these stories. The story of baby Moses is one of the Old Testament stories that left the biggest impression upon me as a very young child... probably because I recall an illustrated bible we had that had a color engraving of the basket being found amongst the reeds.
